I Didn't
Know That!

I thought you might be interested in these fun facts about the Thanksgiving holiday.

Be prepared to wow your family and friends as you share these tidbits around the Thanksgiving table!

~~~~~~
The first Thanksgiving was held in the autumn of 1621 and included 50 Pilgrims and 90 Wampanoag Indians and lasted three days.
Many historians believe that only five women were present at that first Thanksgiving, as many women settlers didn't survive that difficult first year in the U.S.
~~~~~~

Thanksgiving didn't become a national holiday until over 200 years later!

Sarah Josepha Hale, the woman who actually wrote the classic song "Mary Had a Little Lamb," convinced President Lincoln in 1863 to make Thanksgiving a national holiday, after writing letters for 17 years campaigning for this to happen.

~~~~~~
The first Thanksgiving dinner was eaten with spoons and knives - but no forks!
That's right, forks weren't even introduced to the Pilgrims until 10 years later and weren't a popular utensil until the 18th century.
~~~~~~

Thanksgiving is the reason for TV dinners!

In 1953, Swanson had so much extra turkey (260 tons) that a salesman told them they should package it onto aluminum trays with other sides like sweet potatoes - and the first TV dinner was born!

~~~~~~
Wild turkeys can run
20 miles per hour when they are scared, however, domesticated turkeys that are bred are heavier and can't run quite that fast.
~~~~~~

Benjamin Franklin
wanted the turkey to be the national bird, not the eagle.

~~~~~~
Neil Armstrong and
Buzz Aldrin's first meal in space after walking on the moon was foil packets with roasted turkey.
~~~~~~

The heaviest turkey
on record, according to the Guinness Book of Records, weighs 86 pounds.

~~~~~~
Female turkeys (called
hens) do not gobble.
Only male turkeys gobble.
~~~~~~

Campbell's soup
created green bean casserole for an annual cookbook 50 years ago. It now sells $20 million worth of cream of mushroom soup.

Travel Tips

This is probably the most time consuming of the tips I'll give you, but it can save you in a jam.

Create a day-by-day itinerary of your trip.

Include all flights, confirmation numbers, hotel stays, addresses, and phone numbers.

Read on to find out how this tip helped one savvy traveller:

"After flying 17 ½ hours to Bangkok and then another hour to Tratt, I really wanted to check in to my room.

Guess what?

They had no record that I had made a reservation!

In fewer than 10 seconds, I pulled out my detailed itinerary, opened to the correct day, and handed it to them.

Ten minutes later they said they finally found my reservation, and because of the hassle, they gave me an amazing cottage right on the beach.

Same thing happened with my travel partner when flying Vietnam Air -- no reservation!

Again, by being prepared, he was able to prove he had the reservation and the problem was averted."

Watch Out
For These Scams

Renter Beware!

Thailand

How it works:

This scam used to be associated with renting motorbikes, but now it's also progressed to renting jet skis.

When you rent jet skis on the popular beaches in Phuket or Pattaya, the rental operator will ask for your passport for the guarantee.

After you come back from your fun, they will point out scratches and dents in the jet ski (mostly on the underneath part where you didn't notice at time of renting) and they will demand additional money from you - even if you purchased insurance.

In most cases, they will ask for huge amounts of money, normally between 30,000 - 50,000 Baht ($1,000 - $1,500) for the damage.

Most tourists will not agree to pay this ridiculous amount and they will try to negotiate with the vendor.

The vendors can get very aggressive, and even violent, unless the money is paid.

Some tourists have been threatened with knives and even beaten.

Sometimes , out of nowhere, the police will show up and negotiate a discount for you.

Everyone involved (but you) is in on the scam and anything you pay is shared by all.

What you can do:

Only rent jet skis from reputable operators (if you can figure out who the are).

This doesn't always mean you won't be scammed, but it may at least reduce the chances.

Always check for damage and take photographs of the jet ski before you leave with it - including the underside - and make sure you let the rental operator know you're doing it.

Of course, the best option is to never rent a jet ski in Thailand!

Changing Money on the Black Market

Pretty Much Everywhere!

How it works:

Trying to beat the system - and more specifically, the exchange rates - by changing money with locals on the black market is only going to hurt your wallet in the end.

Not only are you generally dealing with shady characters, but you're frequently doing so in sketchy areas.

Often, a few good bills are mixed in with money padded with either folded smaller bills, older illegal money, newspaper, etc., and the money changers are usually out of there so quickly that the duped tourist has little or no recourse.

What you can do:

If possible, exchange some money before you leave home.

Be aware of the exchange rate, so you can't be tricked, and always use an official, reputable outlet when exchanging money away from home.

Tales from the Road

Technical Difficulties

Well, Loyal Readers, as you read this, my Wonderful Husband and I are, indeed, "on the road".
We are making a long-awaited trip to Houston to see our Son, Daughter-in-Law (and, maybe most importantly - but don't tell them I said this) our beautiful Grandson!
Before I left, I made sure to get this newsletter all finished so I could send it out on Saturday, October 7th.
Well, all finished, except for my "Tales From the Road" story.
I knew exactly what I wanted to write about, and I thought it would be a super smart idea to actually write it as we were driving down the road in our motorhome.
Barring that, I would do it in the evening once we were settled into an RV Park for the night.
Pretty brilliant idea, wouldn't you say?
Well, as it turns out - not so much!
You see, there was one thing I forgot to take into consideration in the construction of this plan.
Story idea?  -  check!
Time to write?  -  check!
Laptop to write on?  -  check!
Access to the internet?  -  check!
Okay - wait just a minute here!
Am I the only one in the world who didn't realize that access to the internet in Montana and North Dakota is, for all intents and purposes,  practically  non-existent?
At least, it is with the Telus plan we're using!
Even when we stayed in an RV Park with wifi, the connection was so slow, it took forever just to hook up!
So, unfortunately, that means no story for this newsletter!
Even adding this little bit is quite a Herculean task.
And, as you can see, I can't seem to make the spacing work properly!  I have tried everything, and I have no idea why it won't work!
Granted, I am a bit of a technical luddite, but, come on!  Even I know how to press the "enter" key!
Well, for those of you who wait with baited breath every month for my scintillating attempts at literature - I apologize profusely.
For the rest of you - no harm done, I guess.
And for all of you - just know that even though, due to "technical difficulties", I am not able to share my story with you - I promise I will tell you all about our visit to Mt. Nemrut in Turkey in the very next newsletter.
In the meantime, enjoy the rest of this newsletter - while my Wonderful Husband and I go enjoy our fabulous Grandson!
Oh, and Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Grandma's Secret Spot Remover

I found this product years ago while travelling in the United States, and, take it from me, it works like a charm.

In fact, I've never found anything that works as well as this stain remover does.

Fortunatley, we finally found a supplier for it - so now, we can bring it to you, right here in Canada!

Here's what Grandma's Grandson, the owner of the company, has to say about the product:

"A while back Grandma made her first batch of spot remover to clean Grandpa's work stained clothes.

Soon word got around about how well it cleaned and everyone from Moms to Larry the local mechanic wanted some.

Recently, while looking through an old trunk in Grandma's attic, I came across Grandma's Secret Spot Remover® re   cipe.

I made up a batch and Grandma has agreed to let me share some with you."

And we are so glad he is able to share it with us!

It cleans all kinds of stains on all kinds of fabrics, and it's biodegradable, non-toxic, and contains no chlorine.

The super concentrated liquid comes in a 2 ounce bottle, so it's carry-on compliant.

Compact and extremely effective, it's the perfect spot remover to take travelling with you!

Price:   $7.95

Grandma's Wrinkle Remover

And, Grandma's at it again!

Grandma was always after her grandson Richard to iron his shirts.

"You'll never get a girlfriend running around in that wrinkled thing,"  she would tell him every week as he was running out of the house.

So grandma went into her kitchen and came up with the formula for her Secret Wrinkle Remover.

Now Richard just has to spray his shirt a few times and he is wrinkle free.

And wouldn't you have guessed it, he somehow got a date for this Saturday night!"

Grandma's Wrinkle Remover works just as well as her Spot Remover.

It's safe on virtually all fabrics - although on fabrics that may water-spot (such as silk and rayon), you'll want to test in a hidden area first.

Grandma's Secret Wrinkle Remover is a convenient way to look fresh and wrinkle free in no time!

And, it not only removes wrinkles, the special clean springtime scent Grandma helps remove odors too!

The 3 ounce bottle is easy to travel with, and so convenient to have handy at home.

Price:   $8.95

And, oh yeah, both these products make great stocking stuffers!
