Ovation Concerto Competition Preliminary Round Results
Dear Ovation Concerto Competition Musicians and Families,

Congratulations to all of you on your outstanding performances at our Ovation Concerto Competition Preliminary Round. You all gave truly outstanding and inspirational performances and you should all be very proud of your outstanding achievements!
In addition to congratulating all of you, I am also writing to provide you with the list of musicians who have been selected to advance to the Competition Finals recital on Friday October 19 in the evening at the University Christian Church.

November Concert Call Times
Our season's first concerts are quickly approaching!

There will be regular rehearsals on Saturday, November 10, but no rehearsals on Sunday, November 11 . We encourage students in Debut and Beginning Classes to attend the concert.

Participation at the concert is required by all performers. There will be dress rehearsals prior to the concert at the venues, and as a reminder, any musician who misses the dress rehearsal will forfeit
participation in the concert.  All students are expected to attend the entire concert, out of respect for their fellow musicians . Additionally, we are guests at the College Avenue Baptist Church and California Center for the Arts. As representatives of SDYS, musicians are expected to act respectfully with no cell phone usage during the dress rehearsal and concert.

Veterans Concert
Military Family Photo Submission
To honor our veterans and their families, we are asking any students who will be performing at the upcoming Veteran's Concerts (Overture Strings, Overture Winds, Symphonic Strings, Concert Orchestra, Wind Symphony, Concert Winds, Sinfonia, Wind Orchestra, Symphony Orchestra, or Chamber Orchestra) to submit a photo of them and their family members (preferably in military uniform), if a member of their family is or was in military service.

Musical Artstops
at San Diego Museum of Art
Would you like an opportunity to perform at the San Degio Museum of Art , learn about the connections between art and music, and engage with museum goers?

In collaboration with the San Diego Museum of Art (SDMA), students in
Sinfonia, Wind Symphony, or Ovation are eligible to apply for Musical ArtStops.
Students will have the opportunity to present a 10-minute performance centering around works of art at SDMA. SDYS and SDMA staff members will provide training for students. 

Training will include an overview of the music as it relates to the artwork as well as etiquette while engaging a group of museum visitors.

ChIMES Fall Classes

Calling all families with young children! ChIMES music classes, for kids ages 0-5 and their caregivers, are full of singing, movement, dancing, hands-on instrument play, and lots of fun!

Classes take place at 9:45am and 10:45am on Friday mornings in Balboa Park. Register Now!

ChIMES, Childhood Introduction to Music Education, with Smiles! (formerly Baby and Me Music, BAMM) is an SDYS program that highlights one of the most integral phases of child growth and development: the period of growth that takes place from birth to age 5.

Would you like to be a guest performer for young children? SDYS is seeking Conservatory musicians to be featured on a Friday morning ChIMES music class in Balboa Park. Be a guest performer for 0-5 year olds and their caregivers, playing a piece of music of your choice as well as a classic kid favorite: Twinkle Twinkle or Mary Had a Little Lamb.

Guest performers needed from 9:45am-11:30am on these dates:

This opportunity is particularly great for students who are home-schooled and can be counted for community service hours.

Taiwan Philharmonic Ticket Offer

The American Prize
Ulli Reiner
SDYS's very own Symphonic Strings Conductor, Ulli Reiner , received an Exceptional String Educator Citation from The American Prize in Conducting

Ulli Reiner was selected from applications reviewed recently from all across the United States. The American Prize is a series of new, non-profit, national competitions unique in scope and structure, designed to recognize and reward the best performing artists, ensembles and composers in the United States based on submitted recordings. The American Prize has attracted hundreds of qualified contestants from all fifty states since its founding, has awarded more than $50,000 in prizes in all categories since 2010, and is presented annually in many areas of the performing arts.

YoungArts' National Arts Competition
Now accepting applications
YoungArts is now accepting applications for its 2018 national arts competition, which offers students up to $10,000 in cash awards, mentorship and professional support, and opportunities to take master classes taught by accomplished artists. U.S. student artists, ages 15-18, working in a wide-range of disciplines - including dance, theatre, visual arts and writing, among others - are eligible to apply. 

Deadline to apply is Oct. 12, 2018.

Luna Composition Lab
Luna Composition Lab is a program that provides mentorship and performance opportunities to young female composers.

Luna Composition Lab provides aspiring young female composers with:

  • One-on-one mentorship and bi-weekly Skype lessons with an established female composer from November 1 – June 30
  • Performance opportunity in New York City as part of the Face the Music concert season
  • A week of masterclasses, workshops, backstage tours, concerts, and networking events in New York City
  • High-quality recordings of their work
