Farewell Laura!
We bid farewell to one of our staff members, Laura Jackson. Laura has been with AFAC for 10 years in the Volunteer Department and leading it for the last several years as Director of Volunteer Services. We will miss Laura and wish her the best in her future endeavors.

Virtual Town Hall with Arlington County Manager
Join County Manager Mark Schwartz for a Virtual Town Hall on the County’s FY 2020 budget on Wednesday, Oct. 17 at 7pm. via Facebook Live. Arlington CROP Walk

Think Before you Toss

AFAC is part of the DC Food Recovery Working Group, which is hosting a DC Food Recovery Week from October 13-20. Join AFAC's Cooking & Nutrition Manager on Monday, October 15th from 7:30-8:30pm to learn some recipes to reduce food waste at home. Please note, this class is for ages 14 and older and is limited to 20 people. The class will take place upstairs in the AFAC office. Suggested donation of $5 or 5 cans of foods. Halloween Hootenanny

George Mason High School
Do you love carnival games, raffles, or haunted houses? Join us on Friday, October 26, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at George Mason High School's fourth annual Halloween Hootenanny! There will be a haunted house, food, games, raffle, and lots of fun. This family-friendly event will be held in the Mason cafeteria and auxiliary gym and will benefit AFAC.
CANstruction
October 27 - November 3
Dulles International Airport
AIA Northern Virginia's 15th annual Canstruction event will be held at Dulles International Airport this year due to renovations at Reagan National Airport. On Friday, October 26, local architecture firms build their structures made of canned goods - all of which will be donated to AFAC. Click here to view photos from previous Canstruction events!
Arlington Turkey Trot

It's not too early to start thinking about the annual Turkey Trot! Registration for this Thanksgiving morning's race is live. Proceeds from the race benefit AFAC, A-SPAN, Arlington Thrive, Bridges 2 Independence, OAR, and Young Life of South Arlington. Click here to register.

Volunteer Updates
Join an AFAC Driving Team!
We are looking for someone who is available the 2nd Sunday of the month (occasionally, we may ask you to swap with other team members) around 8:00 am to pick up grocery store donations at the Alexandria Safeway (1624 Belle View Blvd, Alexandria, VA 22307) off of Fort Hunt Road. You can do this in your own vehicle. Once you pick up the donations, you'd deliver directly to AFAC. We estimate this to take approximately an hour each time. Bakers Wanted!
The Farmers Market season will be ending soon and we would like to deliver thank you tote bags containing homemade baked goods and treats to all the wonderful farmers who have donated fresh produce to us throughout this past year. Please email Jocalyn Lombardi for more information at [email protected].
De-CANstruction

Dulles International Airport
AFAC is looking for volunteers to help with breaking down CANstruction sculptures at Dulles Airport so the food can be transported to AFAC. We need 50 volunteers (ages 12+) so this is a great way for larger groups to get involved. Please email [email protected] for more details. 
Fall Backpack Campaign
Food insecure children in Arlington don't always know if food is available when school is out for the weekend. Thanks to our wonderful supporters, we are able to provide these children with packs of food that includes 6 meals and snacks to eat over the weekend. Will you help us keep our children fed? Huge thanks to Ann Wilson and her team for hosting their annual community Shredding 4 Hunger event at Arlington Church of the Brethren. 590 pounds of food and $985 was collected for Arlington families in need! Thank you so much for your continued support! 

Special thanks to Marker Miller Farm for allowing AFAC to glean 4,949 pounds of apples, to USDA in Beltsville for donating 1,656 pounds of fresh beans and winter squash.
