School Performance Framework - Message from Principal Christoff

Hello TJ,
As you may have heard, DPS released the latest School Performance Framework report this past Friday afternoon which is incongruent with the rating the Colorado Department of Education has issued for TJ so I wanted to take a moment to address this.
This has typically been a day when our hard work throughout the previous year has been validated with a "Green" rating by both DPS and CDE. This year although we were "Green" according to the amount of points that we could earn, we were downgraded to "Yellow" due to us falling short on decreasing our academic gaps - specifically on how our Students of Color, Students that receive Free and Reduced Lunch benefits, and our English Language Learners performed vs our non-Students of Color, Non-Language Learners, Non-Free and Reduced Lunch students on the PSAT 9, PSAT 10, and SAT (all scores are combined into one measure). While our Students of Color, English Language Learners, and students receiving Free and Reduced Lunch benefits performed higher than the DPS average across the board on the PSAT 9, PSAT 10, and SAT, due to the gaps that exist we were downgraded to the "Yellow" rating.
I also want to take a moment to highlight some positive news that we received regarding our school rating (http://www2.cde.state.co.us/schoolview/dish/schooldashboard.asp). You do have to select "Thomas Jefferson High School" in "Denver" to find our information. There you will see that according to the CDE report card we are rated as a "Green" high school and surpass the ratings of many DPS and suburban schools that are near us, as were many other schools in DPS. In regards to preparing ALL students for College and Career we were ranked Blue - which is the highest rating possible in DPS! We also had a record high percentage of students passing the Advanced Placement tests last spring (while growing enrollment across all demographics in our AP classes) and continue to offer over a dozen Concurrent Enrollment classes where the pass rates exceed 90% in those classes.
We know that we have work to do and we are dedicated to closing the gaps for all of our learners in our school and we are dedicated to doing so this year. If you would like to learn about the School Performance Framework I will be holding an open session today after school from 4-5 in room 111. I encourage you to stop in and ask questions.

PTO will host the first Staff Appreciation event of the year by providing dinner during Parent Teacher Conferences. Teachers will be busy that night meeting with families, so we will serve a hearty dinner of soup and chili from 4:30-6:

Do you know of a teacher, classroom, project, effort, or other need that would help us make an even bigger impact on school culture? Yearbook Announcements:
- Please check to see if we received your senior quote and photo. There's a poster hanging on the office windows, or you can check the yearbook website to make sure.
- Price: Get your book at the discounted price of $50 until 11-2-18. The price will eventually increase to $65, so act fast!
- Baby Ad: If you would like to purchase a senior/baby ad, they are due by 11-16-18.

Seniors! Tuesday October 30th is Colorado Free Application Day!
What is it?
All 32 public schools will be waiving application fees on October 30th. To see a list of all of the Colorado schools participating, please click here
.
Start your applications now to apply to public in-state schools but do not submit them until October 30th! CU, CSU, UNC, Metropolitan State and many more will be participating. All of your application materials should be prepared, double-checked and reviewed prior to October 30th so all you have to do on October 30th is press submit.

What will TJ be doing on this day?

And while this process is undeniably an important gateway to the next phase of life for our young people, it is also important for parents and students alike to realize that this decision is more about taking a step towards an independent life. Whether your student ends up at a 4 year college, community college, takes a gap year, or gets a job, there are a number of life skills that are important to reinforce as they move towards successful independent living.

Hear ye, hear ye! As the following month rapidly approaches, TJ Theatre students are working long, diligent hours to perfect this year's musical comedy,
Spamalot
, inspired by the 1975 film,
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
. This farcical take on the medieval tale of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round table incorporates modern elements and humor along their quest for the Holy Grail. The show will debut on November 8th, 9th, and 10th at 7:00 p.m.. Digital tickets can be purchased online via MySchoolBucks and are currently priced at $5 for students and $10 for non-students. Paper tickets will also be sold in the next few weeks. Due to the mature comedic themes prevalent in this show, children under the age of 10 will not be admitted. From its humorous audience participation to its incredible set-design, this musical truly incorporates all elements to maximize the overall experience as an audience member.

Community Service Opportunity

The UHills Neighborhood Association is a non-profit that represents the UHills Residents (our boundaries are I-25 to CO Blvd., and Hampden north to Yale). Here is our webpage UHNA.com They are in need of 1-2 students to help update and post upcoming events, Board Meeting Minutes, photos from events, etc. to their website once or twice a month. Part-Time Custodian Wanted

The TJ Spirit Store is stocked and ready to sell! Show your TJ pride in style and comfort with hoodies, t-shirts, hats, blankets and stadium chairs. The TJHS Spirit Store is open every Friday at lunch time. During the month of October we will be having a huge SALE!!!! All 2019 retro-Joe Spartan t-shirts are $5, all other short-sleeved t-shirts are $10, long-sleeved shirts are $20, and hoodies are $25. We also now have beanies with pom poms for $20 and beanies without for $15. We accept cash, credit cards and checks.
The store will be open during events like certain athletic games and other community events such as the ArtFest. The store will be open during parent/teacher conferences from 4:30-6:30 as well! Or, make an appointment to shop with Carrie (

Mental Health and Social/Emotional Tips
|
Sleeping well directly affects your mental and physical health and the quality of your waking life. Fall short and it can take a serious toll on your daytime energy, productivity, emotional balance, and even your weight.
1. Keep in sync with your body's natural sleep-wake cycle
- Try to go to sleep and get up at the same time every day
- Avoid sleeping in-even on weekends
- Be smart about napping
2. Control your exposure to light
- Expose yourself to bright sunlight in the morning
- Avoid bright screens within 1-2 hours of your bedtime
- Say no to late-night television
- When it's time to sleep, make sure the room is dark
3. Exercise during the day
- For better sleep, time your exercise right
4. Be smart about what you eat and drink
- Limit caffeine and nicotine
- Avoid big meals at night
- Avoid alcohol before bed
- Cut back on sugary foods and refined carbs
5. Wind down and clear your head
- Relaxation techniques for better sleep
- Listen to books on tape
- Deep Breathe
- Visualizing a peaceful, restful place
6. Learn ways to get back to sleep
- Stay out of your head
- Do a quiet, non-stimulating activity
7. Bedtime Rituals
- Read a book or magazine by a soft light
- Take a warm bath
- Listen to soft music
- Do some easy stretches
- Wind down with a favorite hobby (not an electronic device!)
