Volume 16, AUGUST 2019

"DOG DAYS" OF SUMMER

Classical mythology has it that the heliacal appearance of the star Sirius--rising just before the dawning of the sun--signals the arrival of a period of  "heat, drought, sudden thunderstorms, lethargy, fever, mad  dogs , and bad luck." The very name, 'Sirius', means "scorcher"and placed, as it is, in the nose of the constellation Canis Major , it was seen as partnering up with the sun in producing the unhappy results. These would be the "days of the dog star."

Happily we are free of the Roman take on these matters even if we are not free of the days of the lingering heat we associate with them. The fact is, we of Road2RecoveryCNY must hold ourselves immune to the effects of these days and their lethargic ways. The word 'lethargy' is rooted in "forgetting" (Greek, 'lēthē' ). It means to be suffering from the torpor of forgetfulness. The mission of R2RCNY reminds us that there can be no forgetting--ever. The distinguishing mark of addiction is that it is insidious. It "lies in wait" for the unwitting, the moment of inattention--the forgetfulness that entraps. The mission of Road2RecoveryCNY is to be "un-forgetting"--to be "a-lēthic". The word means, truth ( alēthēia ). Our very reason lies in bringing persons to live in the mindful light of the truth. As Thoreau says, " Morning is when I am awake and there is a dawn in me."
FOUNDERS MESSAGE:
I just want to say thanks to all of you for sharing my passion
and working to help people with addiction in ways big and small. From posting a positive comment on Facebook to chairing a fundraising event, every contribution is
important and valuable. With several events coming up, we need our volunteers and supporters now more than ever. I appreciate your dedication and commitment to our community. See you at the rummage sale, Family Recovery Program, bike ride, golf tournament, and Rent event!!

Important Note from our Committee Chairperson
ON
SETTING THE STAGE

"We are down to crunch time now. All hands on deck! It is very important that we aggressively start selling tickets for this event as well as soliciting sponsors, advertisements and getting vendors for food. Even more importantly is that we communicate with one another as to what we are doing by using the spreadsheet that was sent to you via google docs. Please put what sponsors/vendors etc. you have solicited and who you plan on soliciting on the spreadsheet with your name. Also please put how many tickets you have sold along with how many tickets you would like to receive to sell. Even if you don't have the physical tickets, don't let this be a barrier, I or Caroline will get you the tickets you need. If there is no place for your information to be put on the spreadsheet, just put it out there. We will ask Deanna to review the information and update the spreadsheet so that it makes sense. It's important that this spreadsheet is up to date at all times. Thank you all for all your efforts and participation. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns. I am attaching the revised Sponsor Packet. Your help truly makes a difference. Enjoy the hot weather!"

Regards,

Sue

PLEASE  TEXT  COLLEEN AT 315-450-8720 OR  EMAIL  COLLEEN AT  COLLEENCKC@HOTMAIL.COM  to let her know where you can help.
We need MANY volunteers.
..........................................................................................................................................

ALSO!!

  • We need volunteers to staff "water stations" at the Onondaga Race for Charity and to help out on the BBQ that follows. It is such an honor to be chosen as the charity recipient and we are most grateful to Alex for spearheading this possibility. Is anyone interested in starting up our own "team entry"?

  • A MOST PRESSING NEED!! SELL TICKETS AND SPONSORSHIPS for SETTING THE STAGE! This event is extremely important to our cause and the challenge to sell these tickets is very real. Please contact SUE if you have any questions. REMEMBER PLEASE: WE MUST SELL OUR TICKETS BEFORE AUGUST 15, 2019!!!

  • And remember, please! We ALWAYS need new volunteers. One of the ways people can support R2RCNY is to bring new people on board! Any friends or family you can think of??
NOTICES AND ANNOUNCEMENTS:
  • Volunteer Navigators
  • We are starting a new program to better support people who come to R2RCNY for help as well as our alumni. Volunteer navigators are volunteers who have experience with addiction in their family, and have proven to be people of integrity and compassion. They are Ed Gabriel, Anne Glenny, Laurie Glather, Melissa Weigelt, and Caroline Desocio. These navigators will help people find help locally, walk qualified ones through the application process for R2RCNY, and continue in relationship with recipients and their families throughout their treatment time and afterwards. We welcome these important members to the R2RCNY team!

  • SoberSyracuse.com
  • Ed Gabriel is spearheading a new website for the community that will provide information about sober events, sober housing, treatment options, and more. This website will be the “go to” spot for anyone who wants recovery. Currently we are in the planning stages, but hope to have it up and running before the end of the year. (Our thanks to Ed on this!!)

Anyone who has information about resources that we might want to include is encouraged to send an email to Darlene at  r2rcnyde@gmail.com .

  • We are pleased to report that our funding efforts through our Facebook page have been remarkably successful. People have used all sorts of reasons for setting up funding events on our page and we are most grateful! Perhaps you too might wish to set up a birthday celebration or some other event as a reason to fundraise on our behalf!

  • Everyone is encouraged to sign on to their Amazon accounts using AMAZON SMILE. If you have not done so it is so easy to do so--and an easy way to support the cause!

  • It is impossible to overstate the funding needs we face--both immediate and long-term. We are SORRY to be continually knocking on people's doors and appreciate that it is often the same folks who are always being asked. As you read through this newsletter PLEASE give a special thought to how you might be able to step up and help in our efforts. We are so grateful to so many for so much and yet the need grows with each moment of our success!

  • Again, our most enthusiastic welcome to our interns--Montana and Mike! We are so very grateful for having them with us and look forward to their contributions to our work going forward.

AMANDA, COLLEEN, ROBIN
for
OUR FIRST SOBER EVENT!

As you all know, one of the best ways for us to offer continuing support to our "recovery community" is by putting together SOBER EVENTS where we can all meet and enjoy our lives in the company of persons who share in our challenges. We shall continue in these efforts into the future. And, by the way, anyone who has an idea about putting together our next event should feel free to step up and get it moving!!

This first event took place at Maxwell park, with grilled food, games, and,(Believe it!) live music!

(Our thanks to Nadine Prince and Connor Campbell
for their delightful musical contribution to this affair!)

GoFundMe campaign (Don't forget!)

Now it's even easier to donate to help save lives. Just click on the Go Fund Me words below. Be sure to share the link with all your friends and contacts! Our goal is to raise $25,000, enough to pay for 90 days of treatment, 90 days of sober living, and 90 days of sober coaching, plus airfare, prescriptions, etc. for each person we are fortunate enough to send down to treatment. That's six months of care, after which recipients are working and self-supporting. It is an amazing amount of money but so very worth it!
