Agora. The After Party. CROP Walk

The Problem With Glory Days
Tracy Keenan preaching

Dear Covenant friends and family,

People like to talk about the good old days, when things were good. This country. Society. Church. The world. Any sentence that begins with the words "these days," is sure to be said with a grim shake of the head, no matter which side of the political divide you are on.

So when exactly were these good old days we pine for?

In our story of theological ancestry, the glory days might have been under King David, or better yet, Solomon. Solomon in all his glory. Solomon of the great riches and famed wisdom, the establishment of the nation respected by other nations, the builder of the Temple.

They were glory days for Solomon himself, to be sure. And Israel had a respected reputation in the wider world. But there were those who found his rule to be oppressive; in fact, ten of Israel's twelve tribes found it to be so.

The minute Solomon died, all chaos broke loose and the kingdom never really recovered.

There’s always a good question to ask when we talk about glory days. For whom were they glorious? And for whom were they not so good? And what does that matter? Solomon may have more to teach us than we thought.

Grace and peace,
Tracy
