Greetings!

As planning for the new Susan S. Goode Fine and Performing Arts Center continued over the summer, the joys and jumble of construction required us to alter the typical delivery of the Center for Sacred Music's (CSM) annual Sacred Music Summer Conference. In its place, a new program, "4th Thursday Summer Sings," was developed and it exceeded all expectations.

Singers were invited to gather and sing sacred classical works in a relaxed and casual sing-along fashion.  For some, it was an opportunity to sing an old favorite, and for others, a chance to practice sight-singing or work with new conductors. CSM's community partner, Christ & St. Luke's Episcopal-Norfolk, opened their space and graciously coordinated the evening details.

On June 28, Billye Brown Youmans, Director of Music at Great Bridge Presbyterian Church (Chesapeake), and a member of the VWU Performing Artist Faculty, conducted Handel's Messiah (parts II & III) with Kevin Kwan accompanying. On July 26, Kevin Kwan, Organist and Director of Music at Christ and St. Luke's Episcopal (Norfolk) conducted Mozart's Requiem in d minor with Bradley Norris accompanying.  On August 23, Charles Woodward, Artistic Director of the Virginia Chorale, and Director of Music at St. Paul's Episcopal  and Ohef Sholom Temple (Norfolk) conducted Mendelssohn's Elijah with Dr. Stephen Cook accompanying.

In all, some 430 persons participated in these unique opportunities to open music history's treasure chest and rediscover the spiritual power of wondrous compositions from 'unexpected preachers.'

As always, there are exciting things ahead.  If you're in the area, I hope you'll join us for upcoming CSM events this fall.
