Here is an update of what is happening at
House of Prayer this week!
Worship This Sunday
As he was setting out on a journey, a man ran up and knelt before him, and asked him, "Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?" Jesus said to him, "Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone. You know the commandments: 'You shall not murder; You shall not commit adultery; You shall not steal; You shall not bear false witness; You shall not defraud; Honor your father and mother.'" He said to him, "Teacher, I have kept all these since my youth." Jesus, looking at him, loved him and said, "You lack one thing; go, sell what you own, and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me"
(Mark 10:17-21).

There's a desperation in the man who ran up to Jesus and knelt before him. "Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?" It's a sincere question. Perhaps we wonder this ourselves, at times. Are we doing enough? Do we have a secure place in heaven? What Jesus had to say, however, wasn't what he wanted to hear. Can't it be easier, Jesus? Do we need to give up everything to follow you? Join us this Sunday as we explore more on what truly gives us life.

Confirmation Retreat
This past weekend our 7th and 8th grade youth went to Luther Park Bible Camp for the annual Confirmation Retreat. Pastor Ben led lessons about "Discovering the Real Jesus," the group tackled team challenges in the ropes course, we helped camp staff prep for winter, and of course there was free time for fun. Sunday morning for our worship each of the youth helped lead a skit and we reflected on the questions "How is Jesus showing up in our lives?" and "How is Jesus calling us to show up for others?" More photos from the trip can be found on the HOP Facebook page.
Chili-FEAST
Thanks to all who brought a pot of chili and those who came to eat at week's Chili-FEAST! We just might have to make this an annual event.

There will be no FEAST service in November as the first Sunday is All Saint's Day.
Trunk or Treat
Neighbors Welcome!
This year our Trunk or Treat event will happen on Wednesday, October 24th from 5:30-6:30pm so mark your calendars! This is our annual chance for children to go trick or treating in our parking lot and show off their costumes! If you'd like to share candy with the trick or treaters from your car (decorations encouraged), please sign up on the attendance card. That evening someone will direct you where to park so all trunks are facing the same area. Neighbors and friends are encouraged to come too, this event is open to everyone! Any questions can also go to Ben Whalen ( [email protected] or 612-500-9523).

The Fall Festival Team appreciates your help in advertising this wonderful event, please consider posting a sign in your yard. Yard signs will be available this Sunday after each service.

Welcoming Listening Sessions
House of Prayer Leadership Ministry Team has set up a task force to look at our core value of Welcoming.  In particular, what does it mean to be a welcoming church?  Our goal is to find out more about individual members of HOP, build relationships, and discuss how we could become a more welcoming congregation.  If you're called to participate in an interview, please take a little time and help us learn more about you.
Thanks,  Scott Wright HOP President
Do you Appreciate History?
You may want to consider helping with the Confirmation Class History Project. We have a small group attempting to identify faces of confirmands in all class photos throughout the history of HOP. Eventually our long range Big Audacious Goal (BAG) would be to contact all that are still living. If you care to help contact Mike Murphy ( [email protected]) or Darlene Clauson ( [email protected])

Can you identify the location and circled person in this circa 1953 photo? Hint: She went on to be a member of the 1959 Confirmation Class. Answer provided later in this publication..

Helping Our Literal Neighbors
We have another opportunity to help Aeon, the housing nonprofit who recently bought the Season's Park Apartment buildings to the south of church. They continue to catch up on a LOT of deferred maintenance that previous owners ignored. They'd like our help painting the interior common areas in one of their buildings on Sunday, October 28th from noon-3pm. We'll eat lunch together after the 11:00 service is done and then head over to paint! If you'd like to join us, please sign up with Ben Whalen ( [email protected] or 612-500-9523). Please also contact Ben if you want to support this cause financially but missed the special offering opportunity. Thank you!
