Dear Friends of Safe Harbor Lab Rescue,

Happy Fall! Hope you and your best four-legged friend will be able to take some time to enjoy the cooler days with a walk through the aspen trees as the leaves change color.

Remember to order your 2019 SHLR Calendar soon, very soon. They're being snatched up quicker than a Lab after a squirrel!

Wonderful Labs + Outstanding Foster Families = New Beginnings!
Wonderful Labs are waiting for us to rescue them. Where are they?
They are in crowded shelters with the clock ticking; some are scared or doing poorly in a cage, and some are big, happy young black Labs that are continually overlooked as just another big black dog. They may be with owners who are too ill to care for them, moved to assisted living, have lost their home or income and can no longer keep them; others are signed over to vets to be euthanized because they were old or had a manageable medical condition that was just too much trouble. Some are orphans whose owners have passed away.

Our outstanding foster families are our Labs' safe harbor. Safe Harbor is a foster-based rescue. This means we have no brick and mortar facility and depend entirely on our foster families' love, care, and generous time to save Labs in need. Our foster families are truly an awesome and exceptional group of volunteers!

Would you like to join them and make a difference in a rescued Lab's life? As a foster you are a critical part of our team that saves a Lab's life. Our foster families are supported 24/7 by a team of dedicated volunteers. We pay for all vet care.  Fosters provide food, love, stability and structure to help get their Lab "guest" ready for a very rewarding moment: their forever home on Adoption Day!

Dear Labby: Ghosts and Goblins and Princesses, Oh My!

Dear Labby,

Photo by Kateri Nelson. All Rights Reserved.
Last October some really weird creatures came to my house: skeletons, zombies, princesses, and even a walking pumpkin! All were carrying a bag of deee-licious smelling things. They said something about tricks and treats when my dad opened the door. I did my best trick but didn't get a treat. What's going on?

Dear Slider-

It's time for Halloween! People dress up and get treats from their neighbors, not for tricks like rolling over or sitting pretty, but for dressing up -- silly humans. While it's fun for people, we pups can get ourselves in a pickle. So take you parents aside and remind them:
  • Chocolate makes us sick and so does the sweetener xylitol that's found in candy, gum, and baked goods. Both are poisonous to us. Yes, the ER is open all night, but we don't want to go there.
  • Constant doorbell ringing makes some of us go bonkers, get stressed out and not be our normal sweet selves.
  • With goblins standing in an open doorway we may bolt, so make sure we are tucked away safe inside and have our collar with current ID on.  Being lost in the dark is no fun and dangerous, too.
  • If you just have to dress us up, make sure we can see and like being dressed up.  We would prefer not to be dressed as a cat!
  • Suggested not-too-scary bedtime reading:  "The Halloweiner" by Dave Pilkney.
Love,
~Labby

New Beginnings: Izzy
Meet Izzy (short for Isabelle, fka Willow).  Sarah and Steve were looking for a young, playful Lab to add to their family after the loss of their 14-year-old wonder dog and former calendar cover boy, Yoshi, in the spring.  As the coordinator of the Safe Harbor foster team, Sarah kept an eye out for a dog that might be a good match for their other Lab Avery.

"We knew that we wanted a young friend for Avery and also a confident dog who loves people to help Avery with some of her fears.  When we heard about Izzy we thought that even though we had originally been thinking about getting a male dog, her playful nature might be a perfect match. We picked her up from the foster and she was so happy to meet us, rolling on her back and giving us a big smile.  We took her home and she and Avery quickly became best friends."

They wake up at the crack of dawn and play almost nonstop for most of the day. Izzy is pretty well-behaved for a young dog, and after a couple of training sessions she's been much more fun to walk on-leash. This is important because we recently moved to the mountains and there are many miles of trails to explore.  She loves everyone and will freely give out hugs and kisses and roll over for belly rubs."

Thank you to Safe Harbor for bringing Izzy into our lives and thank you to Penny for fostering Izzy!

Volunteer Spotlight: Kate Livingston
Meet Kate Livingston, one of our fabulous Safe Harbor Lab Rescue volunteers. Kate found out about our rescue while volunteering for the Humane Society. Kate had a yellow Lab who had passed away, and she didn't think she could get another dog...that was until she decided to volunteer for the first time to transport dogs from Utah to our vet. She transported Sophie and it was love at first sight. Kate immediately asked if she could adopt Sophie and then became a transport failure! Almost a year later, Kate and Sophie have helped foster eight Labs, opening up their home to Labs in need. Kate finds fostering very rewarding and has a picture of every foster so she can always remember them.

Kate and Sophie attended their first LabFest this year, and they will be back for future events. Sophie enjoyed the pool, though she'd like it all to herself, and Kate liked the silent auction. Fun was had by all!

When asked about her favorite part of volunteering, Kate said she didn't know who was better -- the dogs or the people associated with Safe Harbor Lab Rescue. It's reassuring with everything going on in the world to know that there are so many people who truly care about the Labs that we rescue. She gets more out of volunteering than she gives back. While we appreciate the thought, we really want to thank Kate for all she does for our rescue.
