Serve Wisconsin announces $7.1 million in federal AmeriCorps funding for Wisconsin

Wisconsin has received $7.1 million in AmeriCorps funding from the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS), the federal agency responsible for AmeriCorps and other national service programs. This funding will support 26 AmeriCorps programs, including 4 new programs. Additionally, the funding will support three organizations with planning grants in their efforts to start new AmeriCorps programs.

"We are so pleased to be supporting more AmeriCorps members in Wisconsin - Congratulations to all the organizations who were selected to receive funding," said Chester Spellman, director of AmeriCorps. "AmeriCorps members are improving the lives of millions of citizens, including in Wisconsin, and are an indispensable resource for nonprofits, communities, and the individuals they serve. As we mark the 25th anniversary of AmeriCorps, we salute all AmeriCorps members and alumni for standing up and serving our country."

These funds will put over 900 AmeriCorps members on the ground to tackle some of the toughest problems in Wisconsin, including the opioid epidemic, the academic achievement gap, housing shortages for low-income families, and healthcare access. Because of the unique model of AmeriCorps, this will also mean that Wisconsin AmeriCorps programs will leverage an additional $5.9 million from the private sector, foundations, and other sources, which will further increase the return on the federal investment for Wisconsin communities.

The AmeriCorps members serving over the next year will continue a legacy of service in Wisconsin, which continues to be strong and to expand as AmeriCorps celebrates its 25th anniversary this fall. Since 1994, more than 26,000 Wisconsin residents have served approximately 40 million hours through AmeriCorps, earning Segal AmeriCorps Education Awards totaling more than $101.2 million.

Milwaukee Named #7 AmeriCity in the Nation

Milwaukee was recently named the #7 large city in the United States for enrolling AmeriCorps members by the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS), the federal agency that administers the AmeriCorps program and leads the nation's national service and volunteer programs.

There are over 400 AmeriCorps members serving in Milwaukee schools and nonprofits where they  tutor students, serve in health clinics, run after school programs, help high school students prepare for college, build up the capacity of nonprofit organizations, and work to create a more just and equitable Milwaukee. This year, CNCS will invest more than $2 million to support AmeriCorps members and projects in Milwaukee and their mission to improve the lives of its residents.

This fall marks the 25th anniversary of the AmeriCorps program and more than 5,800  Milwaukee residents over the past 25 years have served in AmeriCorps. They have  provided more than 10.2 million hours of service to their country and local community  through AmeriCorps and received more than $25,620,000 in Segal AmeriCorps  Education Awards.

"We are incredibly proud that Milwaukee is one to the top large cities nationwide for  recruiting AmeriCorps members. Milwaukee has a legacy of civic engagement and being  a Top 10 "AmeriCity." We are proud to continue the tradition," said, Jeanne Duffy,  Executive Director of Serve Wisconsin, the state commission charged with managing  AmeirCorps programs in the State of Wisconsin.

September 11 National Day of Service and Rememberence -
Find and Register Service Projects

In 2009, Congress established in federal law that September 11th would be a National Day of Service and Remembrance and made the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) responsible for helping to support this effort. Each year, Americans complete service projects on September 11 as a tribute to victims, survivors, first responders, and others who rose up in service in response to the attacks in 2001.

Looking for AmeriCorps Alumni Photos and Videos to Celebrate the 25th Anniversary of AmeriCorps in Wisconsin

This October, Serve Wisconsin will be celebrating the 25th Anniversary of AmeriCorps at our opening ceremony, which will be taking place on October 11th, 2019 at the Milwaukee County Zoo. We would like to celebrate all of our members who have served with AmeriCorps over the past 25 years here in Wisconsin. In order to achieve this, we would love to have a compilation of both pictures and videos of members and alumni over the years.

We are looking for photos (or videos) from AmeriCorps alumni during their service, which we will use to create displays and slideshows of AmeriCorps members throughout the last 25 years. We are additionally looking for brief video clips (between 15-45 seconds) that alumni could record that describe their AmeriCorps experience and how it has influenced them.

Larger videos and photos can be uploaded  HERE .   You may also email smaller files directly to [email protected] . Maggie will email you with a confirmation after she receives your content.

Thank you to our AmeriCorps alumni in advance for your support and for your service!
Serve Wisconsin Hosts Grant Writing Workshop

Serve Wisconsin and the Wisconsin Evaluation Collaborative presented a one-day AmeriCorps Grant Writing Workshop on August 12 to help the 21 participants become familiar with the AmeriCorps program grant application process and requirements and to strengthen their applications for future federal AmeriCorps funding. Topics that were covered included the application instructions, program narrative, budget, logic models, performance measures, and data collection. Participants learned how to build a strong program design that is informed by data and evidence through individual and group activities, including time to work on grant application elements with the presenters.
