Opening Doors for Young Parents Report
In its latest KIDS COUNT® policy report, the Annie E. Casey Foundation highlights the needs and challenges of the more than 6 million young adult parents and their children living in the United States. Opening Doors for Young Parents illustrates the challenges young parents encounter especially in a changing economy. For example, young parents (ages 18-24) are more likely to work full-time than non-parents, but their median annual family income is just $23,000 — only slightly above the federal poverty level for a family of three.
In Nevada specifically, there are 29,000 kids who have young parents and of those, 60% live in low-income households.

Nevada Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program
Nevada ranks near last nationally in rates of lead poisoning screening in children. Research shows there is no safe level of pediatric lead exposure and at low doses most kids show no symptoms, which is why testing is so important. Chronic or high doses of exposure can cause many symptoms, including behavioral and learning disorders, nervous system damage, reduced IQ, or even death. The CDC recommends testing at 12 and 24 months or at least once before age 6 if not previously tested. However, less than 3% of children in Nevada are currently tested. Make sure your children are safe. Blood lead testing is covered by Medicaid, Nevada Check Up and most private insurances. Talk to your primary care physician or pediatrician today.
Lead can be found in your home or in things you bring into your home. Lead hazards exist in older homes (pre-1978), imported products and everyday items like mini blinds, keys, and jewelry. The Nevada Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program aims to improve testing rates for children in Nevada through community engagement and outreach to medical professionals and healthcare providers. For FREE lead-poisoning prevention educational brochures or posters for your office or clients order, please call 702-895-1040. For more information on lead dangers and testing, visit nvclppp.org

Unsafe sleeping conditions kill a baby almost every two weeks in Clark County
Unsafe sleeping conditions are due to suffocating or rolling off the bed and it happens to any demographic. These deaths are preventable and Baby's Bounty works to prevent those deaths by helping to distribute essential baby items, including cribs to many families in Nevada.

Read more about unsafe sleeping conditions here

Learn more about Baby's Bounty here
Around 3,500 babies die from sleep-related deaths every year. We can change those numbers by having better conversations with caregivers about what safe sleep recommendations look like and why following them can save a baby's life.

To help support and spark those conversations, take this video quiz that reviews recommended safe sleep practices. The quiz is not a test; instead, it is an interactive teaching tool to help health professionals engage families in conversations about what safe sleep looks like and why it is important.

Go Before You Show
The Nevada Statewide Maternal and Child Health Coalition, in coordination with Washoe County Health District, is launching the Go Before You Show® campaign statewide. The mission of Go Before You Show® is simple -- to affect social awareness and create long term change by promoting the importance of women seeing a doctor early in their pregnancy to help improve their health and the health of their baby. Women are encouraged to see a doctor early if they think they might be pregnant or before their twelfth week of pregnancy.

The coalition has flyers to distribute to the community, if your organization wants flyers contact Jacqueline Kennedy by email   Jacqueline.Kennedy@DignityHealth.org   or call 702-616-4970.
Sober Moms, Healthy Babies
The mission is to reduce the impact of substance use in Nevada. One of the primary goals is to prevent alcohol and drug use among women of childbearing years and women currently pregnant. To achieve this goal, they have partnered with many of the treatment centers in the state that treat pregnant women struggling with addiction. Overall, for State Fiscal Year 2013, SAPTA funded 22 treatment organizations, providing services in 68 locations throughout Nevada. Together, these providers had 11,907 treatment admissions. Sober Moms, Healthy Babies provide many resources if you are looking for help or if you are wanting to help someone else.
The NV Statewide MCH Coalition sub-grant is supported by the Nevada State Division of Public and Behavioral Health (DPBH) through Grant Number B04MC29352 and BO4MC30626 from the United States Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) and the State of Nevada General Fund.
