Cancellations
Following guidance from the CDC, as well as adhering to state orders regarding COVID-19, every Area 10 event that was scheduled for this spring and published in this newsletter has been cancelled. As we receive information about rescheduled events, we will inform you. I think it's pretty safe to predict that events will be rescheduled for 2021, rather than sometime later this year.

National Seminar in Orlando, FL starting Friday, July 17th, is still expected to be held. Registration is still open and the Early Bird pricing has been extended to June 1.
Register for National Seminar. If you have never been, I highly encourage you to go - at least once. Registration fees include, among a lot of other things, 15 classes over a 4 day period. I just counted - there are 62 different topics to select from!
Next year, National Seminar will be in Phoenix and 2022 will be combined with the international Symposium in Nashville, TN.
PASSINGS TO NOTE
Sadly, we have learned that Area 10 lost two of its long-time leaders in our ringing community in the last week.
Blanche Kangas died on Friday, March 27 and Cyndy Patterson died on Sunday, March 29. Please keep their family and friends in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

Notes from the Chair
Greetings
Was it just last month I was asking you to get out and support all of our Area 10 handbell events? I had registered and bought the music for at least two of them. Now, all but the Snake River event which snuck in before the virus became widespread, have been cancelled. But the good news is that many of the sponsors have contacted me with the info that 2021 events have been scheduled, venues confirmed, repertoire to remain the same with clinicians in place. As we get further information it will be posted
on the Events page of the Area 10 website
.
In news from our national organization, Handbell Musicians of America, national elections are complete. The voters elected Grieg Ashurst as Board President-Elect and Tracey Bowers and Gillian Erlenborn as At-Large Board Members. Adoption of an updated set of by-laws was ratified. I would like to publicly thank Jennifer Vangolen of the Seattle area for serving these past 6 years as an At-Large member of the board. In other news, after 12 years of service, Jennifer Cauhorn has announced her resignation as Executive Director of the national organization. Having worked with Jenny in a number of situations particularly with Distinctly Bronze/West I know she is a great champion for handbell ringers and a tireless worker on our behalf. We will miss her! Ed Rollins, of Missouri, has been appointed interim Executive Director.
Finally, I know we are all missing making music with our friends during this viral pandemic. However, I am confident that by following the directives of our local governments and the CDC, this shall pass and we'll be able to pick up where we left off.

 Who's Got Rhythm? Not me!

Some people have it and some don't. I don't. I learned, as a teenage majorette, that I was always a smidge of a beat behind the beat. And that was a straight 4/4 march! I studied classical piano as a child. I didn't have to match the beat with anyone else. If I encountered a difficult few measures, I could just slow down and take my time, play as musically as possible, then get back up to speed. There was no director waving his arms that I had to follow. But I struggled with some passages. Rachmaninoff's Prelude in c# minor, for instance. The triplets that alter left and right hand, but accent the first beat of every triplet. RIGHT left right, LEFT right left, RIGHT left right, and so on. I really had to work hard to master that part; it didn't come naturally.
Then I was introduced to handbells with that person up front waving his arms, having to play in time with everyone else, and they didn't slow down to let me catch up! All those rhythmic patterns. Really fun, but really hard for me. I count so loud in my head, I'm surprised the numbers don't pop out on my forehead!
Fast forward 40 years from my majorette days and I'm retiring in a small, rural village in the mountains of Montana. Gotta play handbells! The nearest handbell choir is a 100 mile round-trip drive - through the mountains and primarily in winter, i.e. dark and snowing. So I started a choir in town. I wanted playmates. My grand plan backfired! We grew a choir here, but I wound up directing - not playing. Only one choir member had ever played handbells before. I have never trained as a director, and all of my ringers are accomplished musicians. Their handbell ringing skills have now surpassed my directing skills for the level of difficulty we are ringing. One piece in particular was scheduled for the Big Sky Festival - No Dark Valley, arranged by the clinician, Michael Glasgow. It has this recurring rhythmic pattern (that's FAST!) that I just didn't know how to get all my ringers together. Then I noticed that same pattern, in other time signatures and other tempos throughout several pieces in the Coppers Classic and Big Sky Festival repertoires - both of which I was registered for.
Clearly we (I) have to master this pattern. I'm asking for tips, hints, input of any kind from ringers and directors alike. If you are a ringer, what teaching skill works best for you as an individual to learn new rhythms? If you are a director, what skills help you to get your choir as a whole playing rhythmic patterns together? Please send any input to

2020 Big Sky Handbell Festival - CANCELLED

Come join us in Missoula, Montana for the 39th Annual Big Sky Handbell Festival! We are excited to have Michael J. Glasgow from Raleigh, North Carolina as our clinician! Rehearsals will begin at 7:00 pm Friday, April 24 and continue Saturday, April 25, culminating with a 7:30 pm concert.
Registrations are due by March 27.
On Friday, April 24 at 1:30 pm, Michael Glasgow will present a seminar
"How Am I Supposed to Ring THAT?" for directors and others.
This class will address creative "outside the box" solutions to common ringing challenges in beginning-level to mid-level choirs.
