Principal's Message

Murwood Families,

This Friday, we have our Soul Shoppe "Stop and Breathe" workshop.  In this lesson, students will learn emotional self-awareness, the ability to recognize and understand their own feelings and personal identity and self-management skills, the ability to regulate and monitor behaviors, feelings and impulses in order to get their needs met. Click the link below to read the parent letter that outlines how you can use the Soul Shoppe language and support your child at home.

Each month, I address the very important topic of attendance here at Murwood.  October's theme is "Attending School Helps Prepare Me for My Future."  Students learn daily to read and write and solve complex math problems in collaboration with peers delivered through the workshop model. Students who are absent, late or off on a family vacation miss instruction that cannot be replaced. They also miss out on important social connections and all the lesson painstakingly created for their well being.

Today, I ran a report for students who missed two or more school days between August 22 and September 27, the first twenty-eight days of school.  In that short window forty students were absent a total of one hundred eighty days, the equivalent of one full school year!  Our tardies are at a record 256 for this year.  Every time a student is tardy, the learning stops, and everyone loses out, especially the students who are in their seats on time.  Every child deserves the full lessons their teacher has painstakingly prepared and is enthused to offer.  Please help us by taking those vacations during the ample opportunities made available in our academic calendar. From the Office

Thank you to all the parents and volunteers who are following our new secure campus procedures by signing in and wearing a visitor badge whenever on campus.  We are a closed campus during school hours, so it is important that all visitors check in at the office to obtain a visitor badge.  We also now require ID from anyone picking up a student during school hours, so please be prepared to show your ID even if we know you.  Our new motto in the office is, "ID for everyone every time so we forget no one".  We thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

Thank you!

Murwood Office Manager
October is Creek Safety Month

In support of the Contra Costa County Flood Control and Water Conservation District's ongoing efforts to educate the public on creek and channel safety, the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors has once again declared this October as Creek and Channel Safety Awareness Month.

This annual campaign is to remind us that we must become aware of the seasonal dangers around us and take the necessary steps to educate ourselves and our children to avoid them.

Pies!  Pies! Pies!

Murwood Elementary is selling pies for a fundraiser.   We will be selling pies to help support Murwood PTA.  Come to the General PTA meeting on October 16th at 6:30 pm to taste the pies, and join us for our PTA meeting.

This year, the Murwood PTA is partnering with the Bay Area Rescue Mission to provide dessert to hurting and homeless men, women, and children in the Bay Area. The goal of the Rescue Mission's Food Pantry & Distribution Center is to keep people from becoming homeless by distributing food, clothing, furniture and other household items. They provide over 750,000 meals annually for the homeless and their shelter guests. Approximately 75 of our Pumpkin Pies will provide for just one day of desserts. Please consider making this holiday season special for those less fortunate.

You can also check the PTA website and  can see all the flavors and will purchase pies online.  The flyers were sent on in the Wednesday folders on October 3rd.
Box Tops for Education!

Don't forget to help send in those box tops.  Every month a parent helper will be collecting the box top sheets.  Look for the October Sheet in the Wednesday folder on October 10th!
