EVERGREEN CHILDREN'S CHORALE, CHILDREN'S SABBATH, ALL CHURCH POTLUCK AND TRUNK OR TREAT
Sunday, October 28 - 10:30 service and following

October 28 is a big day in the life of our church. This is Children's Sabbath and Trunk or Treat. The EverKids will be assisting in the service at 10:30, the Evergreen Children's Chorale will be singing during the service, and a Trunk or Treat and Potluck Lunch will take place immediately after the service. family & the children's chorale

We hope you will plan to participate! Here are some details about how to participate:

  • Please bring a dish to share with your church family & the children's chorale.
  • Please bring your Halloween costumes to put on following the 10:30 service. (Adults and EverKids!)
  • Please park in the upper parking lot.
  • Please bring decorations for the trunk/tailgate area of your vehicle.
  • Please bring candy to hand out (adults) and a basket for collecting candy (children).
And here are some tips for decorating your vehicle.
  • Have fun! Be festive!
  • Halloween themes are great, but remember that small children will be participating, so please don't make it too scary.
  • We welcome all levels of decoration. If you really enjoy decorating for Halloween, feel free to go wild! But if you're short on time or décor, you can do something simple, such as Halloween-colored tinsel, or dark garbage bags to make a "bat cave."
  • If you have sociable pets who enjoy dressing up, feel free to have them join you. We have had costume clad dogs join us in the past, and it makes it a lot of fun.
  • Give the time you have. Trunk or Treat and the potluck last until everyone has had their fill. However, if you can't stay for the whole time, that's fine. Come for as long as you are able and leave when you need to.
  • Don't be shy about wearing your costume. The important thing is to have fun. Everyone who is comfortable doing so should bring a costume. However, we are asking that this year everyone wait to change into the costumes until after the service.
If you have questions or need more information, please contact Sarah at youth@evergreenumc.org.

ALTERNATIVE GIFT FAIR

ALTERNATIVE GIFT FAIR VOLUNTEER SIGNUP
BEGINS FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 28 AT 6:00 PM!

As you may recall, the Alternative Gift Fair is a holiday gift fair hosted at Evergreen Lutheran Church and sponsored by UMCE and six other local congregations.  Approximately 50 local, national and international nonprofits sell art, crafts, jewelry, clothes, cards and other items from around the world to support their projects around the world that help those in need.  The AGF motto is "Buy Once.  Gift Twice." When you buy a Christmas gift at the fair, it is a gift to your recipients as well as those in need served by the nonprofit vendors at the Fair. THIS YEAR, THE FAIR WILL BE SATURDAY AND SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 10 AND 11.

Thank you VERY much for those of you who have worked at the AGF in the past! We are again recruiting and coordinating volunteers from UMCE. Once again this year, we are providing a central sign up website using SignupGenius.  This way, at one time, you can see all the open volunteer opportunities and time slots.  As in the past, you may volunteer for Set-Up, Clean-Up, Cashier, Cashier Support, Volunteer Check-In, Van Driver, Parking Lot Attendant, Safety Assistant (medical person) and more! We need your help to make the Fair a success again this year!! THE SOONER YOU SIGN UP, THE MORE CHOICE IN JOBS YOU WILL HAVE!

Questions? Please call, email or visit Bill Graf at (303) 246-8330 and  bill@billgraf.net.  It is easy to sign up online yourself.

To sign up online:
  1. Go to the AGF website http://www.gifttwice.org/  , then click on the "Volunteer" tab on the menu bar at the top, which will take you to a link to the SignupGenius website for the AGF.
  2. Review the volunteer jobs, the dates and time slots and then click the "Sign Up" button for job or jobs you select.  This will result in a check mark (√).  Repeat this for each job for which you wish to volunteer.
  3. When you have clicked all the jobs you want to volunteer for, please click the green "Submit and Sign Up" button at the bottom of the page.  You do not need to set up a SignupGenius account to volunteer at the AGF.
  4. You will be taken to a place to enter information about yourself.  Please:
    1. Enter your name, email, phone number and any other required information; and
    2. Click to show your affiliation with the United Methodist Church of Evergreen.
    3. Do not sign up as a group using just one person's name.  We need the info for each separate volunteer so we can reach him/her if there are changes.
  5. Click "Sign Up Now!" to complete the sign up process.
  6. Click "Back to Sign Up" and  repeat the first two steps to be sure you are shown for the jobs you wanted
  7. Close out SignUpGenius.

IMPORTANT WAYS THAT YOU CAN FINANCIALLY SUPPORT UMCE
There are many ways you can support our church besides the Sunday morning offering. Here are just a few:

Amazon Smile
Amazon Smile is another way to donate to UMCE. Many of us order things from Amazon. The next time you order consider using Amazon Smile. This is how it works: You just log into  www.Amazonsmile.com  (instead of  www.Amazon.com ). Then you will see a screen that will ask what charity you support. You will enter our church name, "United Methodist Church of Evergreen." If you've ordered on Amazon Smile before, your charity name will automatically be registered and you won't get this screen. The church will then receive .5% of your purchase price. This may not seem like much, but it all adds up!

Birthday Donations
During the month of your birthday make a donation to the church equal to the number of years you have been on this earth (or any number you are comfortable with). Make a birthday donation for your parents, children or best friend.

Grocery Card Purchases
Purchase a King Soopers or Safeway reloadable gift card at the church. Use it and keep reloading it to buy your groceries and gasoline at King Soopers or Safeway. Buy the grocery cards for family members, friends, service providers, etc. Encourage them tot he reload the cards and use them to purchase their groceries and gasoline. The church makes 5% on grocery card purchases.

Vehicle Donation
Donate your used vehicle to the church. We have a contract with an organization which sells used vehicles. They give a portion of the sales price to our church.

IRA Rollovers to Benefit the Church
The IRA rollover is a simple and easy way to grow God's kingdom.  If you are 70½, you may rollover up to $100,000 from your IRA to the church without paying any federal income tax on your gift. Your gift to the church from your IRA will qualify for your 2018 required minimum distribution (RMD).  To make an IRA rollover gift in 2018, simply contact your custodian and request that all or  part of your required minimum distribution  (RMD) be transferred to the church. For more information, visit rm-umf.org or contact the United Methodist Foundation at 303-778-6370.

All of these donations provided added benefit to our church. Thank you for your support!

OTHER OPPORTUNITIES & MINISTRY NEEDS

SOCIAL MEDIA TASK FORCE
We Need Your Help!

UMCE's Church Council has commissioned a Social Media Task Force to examine and make concrete recommendations on how we may improve  (1) our outreach to the foothills community to tell them about our great church family, and  (2) our "inreach" to better communicate and connect with our past, present and future church family.

This may take the form of updating our UMCE website and online social media presence (Facebook, etc.), streaming or posting online sermons or parts of Sunday and other special services, establishing a dedicated audio and video broadcast to Fellowship Hall to allow for overflow at highly attended services (such as funerals) and other uses such as family Movie Night.

If you have experience or knowledge in design, marketing or technical  areas needed for this task force and would like to be part of its work, please contact Bill Graf by phone 303-246-8330 or email bill@billgraf.net .

MINISTRY JOTTINGS BY PASTOR DEB

Ministry Jottings:  The Second Right Answer

Nothing is more dangerous than an idea when it is the only one we have. - Emile Chartier

Children are perhaps the most creative among us because as someone said, "they are fresh from God." They have a natural sense of curiosity and creativity, of wonder and connection with the world. Unfortunately, our educational process often curbs this inborn curiosity by intimating that there is only one right answer to questions. As a result they begin to limit their vision, fearing the potential wrongness of their answers. We have taught them to stifle one of God's greatest gifts - creativity.

Creativity is being able to look at whatever else people are looking at - and think something totally different. It's the ability to rearrange old patterns into new ones, to combine two ideas in a way that no one has ever done before. If we are to combine ideas into original ways of thinking, we need to have more than one idea - but we have been taught to look for only one right answer. Reality, however, doesn't always cooperate with our ways of thinking. Life rarely presents us with only one option, with only one solution to a problem.

In Acts chapter 16 we find the apostle Paul wanting to go to Phrygia and Galatia, which would have had him keeping his missionary activities in the Asiatic region of the time. He was prevented from making headway with this one approach he had decided on.  Instead, Paul gets a vision of a Macedonian man appealing to him to come over to Macedonia. Thus, opening up the European world to the Gospel message, changing the course of the spread of Christianity. Like Paul, we need to be looking for the second right answer, maybe even the third and fourth right answer. Life holds more for us than just one right answer - it all depends on our creativity and what we are looking for.

In Christ's grace,
Pastor Deb

It is researching everything you can in a verse to learn more about who God is and how God wants to speak to you through His word. We will learn to use a simple, five step process for Verse Mapping. The group will select Biblical passages that we will read and apply Verse Mapping. Six Simple Steps to change-your-life study time with God!
