Poverty Solutions Speaker Series. The series is designed to
ignite new conversations and deepen an understanding regarding poverty prevention and alleviation strategies and programs by featuring experts in policy and practice from across the nation. This week's Roberto Vargas, an assistant professor at the University of Chicago, will be discussing medicaid enrollment in the Era of Obamacare. Learn about other ways to connect with the Poverty Solutions Certificate in the CASC News section below.
As the midterm election season approaches, we want to encourage your participation in the Big Ten Voting Challenge. The voting challenge aims to increase the number of student voters across the country, and encourage participation at polls for election.The imitative is a nonpartisan call for voter registration and turnout on college campuses, and acknowledges the importance of student voice in this democratic process. In addition to the pledge, the School of Social Work staff, faculty, and students have coordinated a number of activities to encourage voter turnout among students. CASC-MSW Preferred Admissions Program
Students pursuing a Community Action and Social Change (CASC) minor may apply to the Office of Student Services (OSS)
in the School of Social Work for the Preferred Admission Program leading to a Master of Social Work (MSW) as early as their junior year.

CASC Volunteer Program
The CASC Student Advisory Board wants to introduce a volunteer initiative for CASC students to get involved and make a change. By filling out this form, we can gather contact information and identify when, what, and where fellow CASC'ers would like to volunteer. We will then identify projects that best fit the consensus of respondents. Responses are due October 19.

Revolution and Evolution: Lessons from James and Grace Lee Boggs
The Semester in Detroit program, Community Action and Social Change Undergraduate Minor (SSW), and the Boggs Center invite your participation in a discussion about James and Grace Lee Boggs vision, framework, and application of transformational social change and grassroots leadership.
Hosted by Boggs Center board members Stephen Ward and Tawana Petty, the session will explore lessons learned from James and Grace Lee Boggs' lifelong legacy of community organizing in the city of Detroit.

Nationally, September 15 to October 15 is the month to recognize history, culture and contributions of people from Central and Latin America in the U.S. The Office of Multi-Ethnic Student Affairs (MESA) has partner with various student organizations and academic departments to carry out month-wide social and educational programming celebrating Latinx heritage. 2018 Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Summit Week
Following the launch of the five year DEI Strategic Plan, the University began hosting the DEI Summit each year as an opportunity to provide both updated information and transparency in this process. The summit

CEW+ Advocacy: Catalysts for Change
U-M CEW+ is excited to host international and award-winning Burmese activist, Wai Wai Nu. Ms. Nu's lecture will be the culmination of an evening focused on highlighting the applied research of U-M faculty and students engaged in diverse scholarship. Wai Wai Nu was a political prisoner for seven years under the Burmese military government and emerged to serve as a national - and international - voice for Burma's human rights and democracy movement.

Hacking the Vote
In June 2017, Michigan Engineering Professor J. Alex Halderman testified before the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence about the vulnerability of the country's voting systems, having studied and tested such systems for more than a decade.

Luce Scholars Program 2019-2020
Boren Fellowship are awarded to graduate students for the purpose of overseas language study, academic study, research (either Master's or Ph.D. level), an academic internship, or any combination of the above.
