Third Thursday: The Craft of Great Mysteries and Thrillers

Mystery novels (and thrillers and crime novels) can seem intimidating to anyone hoping to write one. When they're done well, the plot twists and clue reveals make endings hard to predict, even for readers trying to tease apart their mechanics. When they're done not so well, one tug of the string can pull the whole thing apart.
This month's Third Thursday panel will focus on the craft elements unique to these genres and discuss strategies and approaches to developing the plots, characters, twists, and reversals that we love. We'll be joined by four terrific novelists:
- Samantha Clark, author of the middle grade novel The Boy, the Boat, and the Beast
- May Cobb, author of the novel Big Woods
- Amy Gentry, author of the novels Good As Gone and Last Woman Standing
- Sherry Thomas, author of the Lady Sherlock series of novels.

Every year we wait with anticipation for our friends at Inprint in Houston to announce their line-up for the Margaret Root Brown Reading Series. For the first time (but we hope not the last time), we've decided to plan an outing for Writers' League of Texas members to enjoy one of these events together.
Acclaimed author Barbara Kingsolver will be featured on Monday, October 22. The program starts at 7:30pm at the Cullen Performance Hall at the University of Houston and we've got 20 tickets and a reserved section with the WLT's name on it. We'll be planning a pre-event gathering for 6:00pm, details to be shared closer to the date.

Final Pages, Final Paragraphs: Crafting the Right Ending for Fiction

The best endings should both satisfy and haunt readers. If you can nail your ending, you have solved the hardest problem of storytelling.
This class will cover endings and their role in the story, looking at examples of effective endings, common mistakes in developing endings, and exercises that help us construct and revise endings that feel both inevitable and surprising.
There will be examples from published texts and questions to prompt thinking about what makes something an effective or haunting ending.
Registration closes on Thursday, October 11, at midnight. Walk-in registrations will be accepted, as space allows.

Here are some of the free, public Texas Writes events coming up this month Each event features two accomplished authors talking about a particular aspect of craft, followed by a discussion about the writing life facilitated by a WLT staffer. There's a chance there will be writing exercises (bring paper and pen) and there will be plenty of time for questions.

Lori Duran (Austin) will present her new book Austin's Travis Heights Neighborhood November 4th 2:00 pm at Book People, 603 North Lamar, Austin. Duran has collected 185 photographs from the Austin History Center and other sources for this book. Also, by interviewing Austin residents Duran has collected historical information on the Travis Heights Neighborhood. More info here.

Volunteer to help out at the Writers' League's booth at the upcoming Texas Book Festival!

We love the
Texas Book Festival, and we're excited to once again participate as a festival exhibitor! We're in search of WLT members to work as volunteers at our booth.
This is a great opportunity to learn more about the Texas literary community and to meet the writers and readers of Texas! (Not to mention spend some quality time with your friendly staff members.)
At our booth (Tent 3, Booths 313-314), we have one table with information about WLT programming, and one table where members of WLT who are authors may promote their books to the general public. We're looking for volunteers to work two-hour shifts between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. on both days of the festival. Duties will include speaking to festival attendees about upcoming WLT events and membership benefits; signing up new members; and managing the schedule of authors promoting their books.
