2015-2016 scholarship recipients announced
EPIC is pleased to announce that Sherif Abdelrazek, Ph.D., Electrical Engineering is the recipient of the 2015-2016 Siemens Energy Masters Scholarship. The EPIC evaluation committee reviewed over twenty applications from highly qualified energy focused engineering students before making their selection. EPIC awarded six Graduate Research Assistant-ships for the academic year 2015-2016, to the following energy graduate students: Muhammad Ahmed, Ph.D., Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) Jenet Hattaway, Ph.D., Infrastructure and Environment Systems (INES) Heather Hendren, Ph.D., Infrastructure and Environment Systems (INES) Sheikh Jakir Hossain, Ph.D., Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) H.M. Cluster Update
The Power Systems Modernization Cluster addresses issues related to the implementation of a smart grid and the impact on: assuring reliable delivery of power, informing the consumer immediately of impending weather-related disruptions and speedy remediation, and managing distributed generation assets optimally to assure high standards of reliability are maintained. The Cluster team is focused on technologies that can assist the industry in minimizing the environmental impact, operating at high efficiency and keeping the lights on. More details

NAPS Calls for Papers
The North American Power Symposium is an international open forum for participants from academia and industry to exchange innovative ideas and solutions with each other and will be hosted by UNC Charlotte and EPIC on October 4-6. Please consider the opportunity to submit and publish original scientific results to NAPS 2015. Authors are encouraged to submit an abstract and full manuscript for review by June 10, 2015. Lab Highlight
The high-bay lab is an advanced, full-scale testing facility where faculty and students design and test resilient infrastructure systems, both above and below ground, many of which support the power industry. As our energy infrastructure ages, complex repairs are often needed in order to extend its life. Likewise, new technologies, materials, and procedures need to be developed to meet future energy infrastructure needs. By researching energy infrastructure improvements and creating new designs, EPIC assists the energy industry in building reliable energy infrastructure components and systems.

EPIC shines at Senior Design Project Expo

Restructuring of EEAO
EPIC is restructuring our Technical Services activity in order to have better representation of all our activities and laboratories at EPIC through EEAO. In order to move forward with this restructuring David Causey will be the new Energy and Environmental Assistance Office (EEAO) Director, reporting to the Director of EPIC. David joined EPIC in January of 2014 and has served as the Assistant Director for Outreach and Development and recently took on the responsibility of the college's Safety Officer.

Graduate students from KIT partnering with EPIC researchers
Eleven graduate students from Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) in Karlsruhe, Germany, are participating in a six-month research exchange program at EPIC.
During the program, the 11 KIT interns will serve as research assistants for nine EPIC faculty members working on a variety of energy related projects.
On May 18, UNC Charlotte students Kaitlyn Chapman, Civil Engineering; Samuel Ludwig and Kristen Venditti, Mechanical Engineering; and Mahfuz Ali Shuvra, Electrical Engineering; began a two-month exchange at KIT.

Start-up works closely with EPIC
CLT Joules is an initiative to promote energy innovation and start-ups among the entrepreneurial community in Charlotte and offers early-stage energy companies a targeted program where they can learn, accelerate growth, and connect to the big players in the energy ecosystem of Charlotte. One such start-up is
xSi Solar, LLC, developers of leading edge crystalline silicon solar cell technologies that increase power production per solar panel. Co-founders Chad Wolford and Dr. Ben Damiani are working with PV expert Dr. Aba Ebong with EPIC, on technology development. Dr. Damiani was the first to implement ion implanted solar cells and advanced metallization in the USA. EPIC is pleased to be a member of CLT Joules and are excited to further build our partnership now that CLT Joules offices are within EPIC.

Please join energy professionals for a presentation and discussion of the Carolina's emerging energy technology, the topic will be about BarberWind Turbines presented by Michael Shore, president and CEO.
BarberWind Turbines is a groundbreaking wind technology company that designs, manufactures, constructs and maintains wind energy assets. The presentation takes place at EPIC and is at 4:30, a
reception will follow from 5:30 to 6:15 pm.
June 8-12
The University of North Carolina at Charlotte invites you to the premier international forum for applied research and industrial applications in manufacturing and design. The 2015 conference schedule will include keynote and technical presentations, expert panels, student poster presentations, an exhibition of industry partners, an early career forum, UNC Charlotte lab tours, an awards banquet, luncheons and more.

The NC Transportation Museum will host Rail Day where you can explore the past, present and future of railway and other forms of transportation. Featuring, trains, autos and flying machines! UNC Charlotte's EPIC is please to be a partner.
July 13-15
The 2015 Appalachian Energy Summit (AES), marks the fourth annual gathering for the University of North Carolina Energy Leadership Challenge. During the summit, campus leaders from our 17 public institutions and seven private colleges and universities convene to share best practices and build peer relationships. This year representatives from other states' university systems are invited. The goal is to jump start a national effort across higher education.
October 4
NAPS is held every year at a different university in North America and provides an international open forum for participants from academia and industry to exchange innovative ideas and solutions with each other. NAPS 2015 will continue the long held tradition of encouraging presentation of papers by students and recognizing their best efforts by awards at the end of the symposium.
