Support South
Our Support South Check Writing Campaign has just begun this week. Your donations are needed to help sustain the many Class Programs, Cultural/Academic Enrichment Programs, Services and School Wide Events provided by PTO. Our goal is to raise $24,000 by November 9th. 100% of your donation will go directly to our kids. Based on parent feedback check writing will be replacing Boosterthon this year. Please take the time to read our yellow impact sheet that came home in your child's backpack. This will help you better understand the scope of our efforts at South Elementary.

It's Time for Math Olympics!
We welcome you and your child to Math Olympics. The first worksheets will be available this week and due on, September 27th. We encourage all children in grades K-5 to participate! This 10-week program is designed to promote your child's problem solving skills.
Each Friday, a new set of math problems for each grade level will be available to download and print from the South School website. Go to www.hinghamschools.com. Under "Schools", select "South Elementary School" from the drop down menu. Click on "Activities", select "Math Olympiad" and your child's grade-level. If you do not have access to a computer, you or your child can pick up a hard copy in the office. Worksheets must be returned the following Thursday morning to your child's teacher. Parent volunteers will take worksheets home to be corrected over the weekend.
Just a few reminders:
*This is a voluntary program open to all South students
*Answers will be marked right or wrong, but the worksheets will not be scored- participation and best efforts are the focus of the program!
*Students who complete nine out of ten weeks will receive a medal in January!

Dear South School Community
,
All of the children are settling into the school year beautifully. They all deserve a great deal of praise for living up to our theme of being kinder than necessary. All of the teachers, support staff, cafeteria staff, and bus drivers have complimented their behavior, and it is amazing to see the amount of active learning that is taking place in all of the classrooms already! This village is indeed a very happy and productive place! Thank you for all of the continued support from your homes and families. The days and weeks get easier as we all settle in to the new routine!!!
It was so great to see many of the families and students in grades 2,4, and 5 at the Back to School Night this past Wednesday. The support you give your children and us makes such a difference to the village.
This year we have welcomed 99 new students to South Elementary (81 kindergarteners and 18 students in other various grades). We are so happy to have them here! They are quickly becoming very important citizens of our village, as are their families!!! A special thank you goes out to Mrs. Kerr, our school psychologist, and Miss Torraco, our adjustment counselor, for organizing the New Student Lunch for children in grades 1-5!!! It will happen on Monday, September 24th . We have all already visited kindergarten lunch on many occasions.
Remember... new and still relevant items in either the principal's email and/or the Office Notes section of the weekly "What's the Buzz ?" (our PTO newsletter), will continue to be bulleted and in bold italics. Old news items that are still relevant will also be bulleted but will not be bolded italics, but left on for reference.

- BICYCLES: We had a wonderful Bike Rodeo for the third graders last Friday. We thank Officer John, the many parent volunteers, and the Third Grade Team as well as Mrs. Jacobs for making this happen!!! Many of the children have been taking advantage of the beautiful weather by biking to school. The child does need to have a note to be able to do this as it is a change in dismissal. Please be aware that only children in grades 3-5 are allowed to ride to school without a parent/guardian along as long as they have parent permission. Bike riders who live in Liberty Pole are asked to walk their bikes to the end of the sidewalk by the fire station, and then they can start to ride. All other children are escorted by a teacher down to the sidewalk/crossing guard near the bus loop. If they live on the school side of the street, they can ride after they cross the lower parking lot crosswalk. If they live on the other side, they are crossed by the guard and then they ride either north or south on Main St. depending where they live. This would also be true for walkers. This procedure will also apply on the way to school. Please go over this with your child. Main Street may be one of the prettiest streets in America, but it is also very busy. So, it will take our whole village to keep our children safe. Thank you for your help with this!!! Also, please ask your child not to arrive at the crosswalk before 8:40 when the crossing guard goes on duty and to follow the rules of the road and stay right unless crossing after looking...many children have been spotted riding their bikes in the middle of the road and crossing without looking in Liberty Pole....Thank you for helping ot keep our children safe!
- The Back to School Night Flyer was sent home in backpacks in grades K,1,3 on Thursday. Those three grades will have their night on Wednesday, September 26th. Please note specific times for specific grades on flyer. It is also on the web site and was attached to Parent Email on Friday.
- FYI: The staff will park out back on the playground for BTS night on the 27th . If you live close and it is possible to walk, that would help out a great deal! Also, we are fortunate that the Lutheran Church which is diagonally across the street, is so generous in letting us use their parking lot any time. It would be a lovely stroll to school from there. (: You may also be able to find someone to carpool with or a parking buddy who lives close by. Thank you for NOT parking on Loring Hill Rd!!!
- Please help us move dismissal at Special Dismissal and Liberty Pole Car Loop (only for those turning right in Liberty Pole) along smoothly:
- Please come in single file at all times. If you cannot pull in, go down the street and turn around for another pass.
- Please put a sign with your child's name in the window so we can move the lines along more quickly.
- It would also be helpful if you stay in your car and let us bring the children to you. Please do not use cell phones in lines!
- On Wednesday, October 3, we will have our first noon dismissal. This year ALL early dismissals will be at noon, and lunch will not be served. This particular one is set aside for parent/teacher conferences. If you would like to schedule a conference, please contact Mrs. Thompson or Mrs. Joy in the office. If your teacher's times are all filled up, please contact the teacher directly to find another mutually convenient time to meet.

School Committee
September 10 Press Release:
During the September 10, 2018 meeting, the Hingham School Committee announced that it will appoint a Screening Committee to assist in the superintendent search process. While the School Committee has the sole authority to appoint the superintendent, the Hingham School Committee will appoint a Screening Committee to assist in the superintendent search process to ensure meaningful representation of community and school stakeholders. The Screening Committee responsibilities include reviewing applications, interviewing chosen candidates from the applicant pool and recommending several candidates to the School Committee for further consideration. The Screening Committee includes 15 members comprising a balanced representation of staff and community members who have a strong understanding of the responsibilities of the superintendent. The School Committee has invited select groups to appoint their representatives including the School Principals, Department Directors, Teachers, PTOs and SEPAC. School Committee Chair Michelle Ayer has appointed members of the School Committee's Salary & Negotiations subcommittee to the Screening Committee including Chair Liza O'Reilly and Vice Chair Carlos DaSilva. In addition, the School Committee will appoint the remaining members including a School Department Central Office staff member, Town Hall staff member and two At-Large community members.

South School Daisy Troop
Calling all Kindergarten girls who are interested in joining the South School Daisy Troop # 67830! Meetings will be held once a month at 12pm on the Wednesday half-days starting on October 3, 2018.
Space is limited to 15 spots so please be sure to sign up if you are interested.
New Brownie Troop for South School 2nd Graders!
Brownie Troop 67831 for second graders at South School is now forming. We have loads of fun programming and outings planned focused on kindness, friendship, outdoors, art, dance, computers/engineering, community service, crafts and more!
Meetings will take place once per month, on Fridays, starting at 3p at SES. There are currently four spots remaining in the troop (max size is 12).
Hingham Youth Wrestling, K-8th Grade
Learn how to wrestle, build strength, flexibility and balance, and most of all have fun. No experience necessary, anyone can join. Sessions start Nov. 27th - March, on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursdays from 5:30-7:30pm at the HHS Wrestling Room. Historic House Tour
It's time to grab your friends and make a plan;
the Hingham Historic House Tour is Sunday, September 30th and you don't want to miss it!
On this year's tour are seven private 1800 and 1900 century homes and four historical public buildings. Tickets are $35 in advance and $40 the day of the tour, and
include a wine and cheese reception at the new Heritage Museum. Tickets can be purchased on line at hinghamhistorical.org.

Nurse's Nook
Dear South School Parents/Guardians:
As we start the new school year, please be aware that cases of head lice may be found in school...but not frequently. Head lice do not carry bacterial or viral infectious diseases and are not a sign of poor personal hygiene or an unclean living environment. They are transmitted by close (head to head) contact and rarely by inanimate objects such as headphones, helmets, hats etc... They are most commonly transmitted outside of school such as during play dates, at camps, sleepovers, and sharing beds.
There are many products on the market that say they "prevent" or "repel" head lice but more scientific research is needed to prove the safety and efficacy of these products. The BEST way to treat and prevent head lice is frequent, extensive head checks and combing. Nits (lice eggs) must be combed out. There are medicated treatments that will help kill lice and nits but they are not foolproof. If nits are not "killed" or removed, they will hatch and the cycle starts again. Always contact your doctor for advice on medicated treatments.
I will make an effort to check siblings and close contacts, if an active case is found. As a courtesy, I send home a note to all grade level parents/guardians, that there is a case in that grade level. Due to the privacy and confidentiality of HIPAA regulations, I am unable to tell you who the students are that are infested. If siblings or close contacts do not have an active case, there is no need to inform anyone in that grade level about it. There is always a possibility that those students could get head lice later but parents are informed and should be checking all of their children.
As a preventative measure, please remember to check your child's head frequently for head lice and nits during the school year. Also, refer to the Health Services section of the South Elementary School website or
http://hinghamnurses.weebly.com/ for more information about head lice, HPS school guidelines, and other school health related information.
