~Policy Profile~
Voting = Voice
Submitted by Hanni Raley, Director of Systems Advocacy

And just like that, another election cycle is upon us!  November 7th is Election Day.  Aurora has multiple seats open on both the City Council and the Aurora Public Schools' Board, so it is important to cast your ballot to be sure your elected representatives are indeed representatives of the community and of YOU!  All ballots (in person or dropped off) MUST be received by 7PM on November 7th.  Read below for helpful hints to be sure you are prepared to cast your ballot.

Curious about the mail-in process?
Every Colorado registered voter will receive a ballot in the mail starting on October 16th. Ballots will be mailed to the address you used when you registered to vote.  If you plan to mail in your ballot, you should be sure to send it by October 31st to be sure your vote will be counted.

Prefer to vote in person?
After October 30th you can go to an in-person Voter Service and Polling Center in your county to register to vote, update your address, drop off your ballot, vote, or solve any election-related issues.

Curious about the voting rights of people with disabilities?
All individuals with disabilities have the right to access the polling place and cast their vote, and polling places are required under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) to meet certain accessibility standards. If you have a disability and need assistance with casting your vote, you have the right to get help from a person of your choosing to help you at the polls, including one of the election workers present there. Also, consider casting your vote by mail so that you have the time and help needed to make informed decisions. Visit Disability Law Colorado's fact sheet to learn more.

General questions about the voting process?
Just Vote! Colorado, a non-partisan voter assistance project not affiliated with or promoting any party, candidate, or ballot issue, is a resource for everyone.  Visit www.justvotecolorado.org to find a statewide list of Voter Service and Polling Stations, register to vote, update your address in order to receive a mail ballot, find your nearest drop box, general FAQs, and other relevant info on the election. Take a look at your ballot by visiting  www.vote411.org.

Want to learn about the candidates?
The most important role of a voter is to be informed. Click here to find the most recent list (as of this date of publication) of local forums and information to learn more about candidates running for City Council and School Board seats.

And as always, if you have any questions about voting, the election, or your right to vote, don't hesitate to contact The Arc of Aurora!
~Spotlight On ...~
The Limbaugh Family

The rains and winds came first.  They called it Harvey.  The Arc of Aurora longtime members, the Limbaugh family, came next. We call them heroes.  The Limbaughs answered the call when a sister Arc Chapter, The Arc of Greater Beaumont in Beaumont, Texas, was in crisis after Hurricane Harvey.

Driving overnight with other members of Peace with Christ Lutheran Church, the Limbaugh family delivered food, water, cleaning supplies, and about 1000lbs of clothing (including 400 lbs from the arc Thrift Stores). The family braved flooding to find that the Beaumont Chapter had turned its building into an emergency shelter housing 20-30 individuals with disabilities. The Chapter had power but did not have running water and was, needless to say, grateful for the additional supplies delivered by the Limbaughs and their church family.

The Arc of Greater Beaumont had this to say:  " In the midst of our darkest times, you gave us the hope that we would survive and recover. 'Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed people can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has. - Margaret Mead'"

Thank you, Limbaugh family, for your continued commitment to people with disabilities by committing your time to help those in need!
