Belt Buckles
These are rare and unusual folk art belt buckles. They are large, measuring approximately 10 centimeters by 7 centimeters (4in. by 3 in.), and weigh approximately seventy grams. The married metal work was done by Master Silversmith Pepe Romano of Taxco, Mexico. They are made by hand in non-precious German Silver and Red Copper, known as Tumbaga. These belt buckles are not stamped or cast to be made. This requires the use of a hand held coping saw to create two separate works which become the face and back of this piece. The Inlay materials in our belt buckles include orange Brazil wood, rosewood, mahogany, bone, horn, mother-of-pearl, lavender mother-of-pearl, Pacific abalone, petrified wood, armadillo shell, and other local and natural materials. The Apache Belt Buckle pictured below was inlaid by Master Craftsman and village elder Leonor Villasana of the mountaintop village of Tecalpulco, Mexico. Once inlaid, the lengthy process to grind down the exposed inlay begins. Finally a high polish is given to the piece in several more steps. A Fair Trade Curator Gift Card and Lifetime Guarantee are included.
