Help us name the youngest birds
in the Phoenix Landing adoption program
|
|
|
A frantic request for help came in on the morning of March 12th. A woman with two conures had an accidental breeding. To make a long story short, two eggs hatched, and the parents were not caring for them. In fact, there was some concern one of the parents might harm the babies. Her veterinarian referred her to us. Could we take them? The babies were now almost two days old, and hadn't been fed. The yolk sac which feeds them initially, would be depleted by now.
Luckily, we were able to find a volunteer, Bea, who was willing to take on the round-the-clock feedings required of such young birds. Thank goodness for Bea! We had some donated hand feeding formula in our freezer at the Adoption Center from Lafeber (which we never really thought we would need, but kept just in case) and were able to meet Bea to transfer the food, some supplies, and the birds to her.
Bea fed them hourly, around the clock and kept them in an incubator. We honestly were not sure if they would even make it through the first day. They were so young and fragile when they came to us. Luckily, they made it through that first day, and are now three weeks old!
We work with birds every day who need homes, so of course we recommend that birds not be allowed to breed. However, these two hatched. They are here. They deserve a chance, so we are appreciative Bea has been able to help them. The timing is pretty amazing, too, as this all happened just before the stay home recommendations were issued.
Now the babies are getting stronger, standing on their own, and are starting to get some feathers in. They finally are able to go 5 hours between feedings, so Bea is able to get a little more sleep. They are in an incubator until they are feathered, and only came out for a minute for a picture for YOU!
Name suggestions were submitted by Phoenix Landing's Facebook and Instagram followers. We received a total of 105 different name recommendations! Bea selected her top picks. Given all the time she has given to them, she deserves that honor! We are now asking you to vote on your favorite names for them. We do not know if they are male or female.

Phoenix Landing classes go online
|
|
|
Since our in-person classes have been suspended due to COVID-19 precautions and Stay Home orders, we are happy to announce the launch of online classes from Phoenix Landing.
The first class we are offering online is called "No Place Like Home: a parrot care class."
When we bring a parrot into our lives, from parakeets to macaws, we are offering them a place to call home. What does home mean? For a parrot it might mean a place to be safe, be healthy, have a sense of family, and be provided positive opportunities to live and thrive. This class will address what each of these means to a bird, and give you some ideas about how to continue providing the good life for your bird. This class satisfies our adoption process class requirement.
Live sessions
Tuesday, April 14th, 10a.m. - 12p.m.
No Place Like Home
Saturday, April 18th, 1p.m. - 3p.m.
No Place Like Home
Sunday, April 26th, 1p.m. - 3p.m.
No Place Like Home
Pre-recorded, self paced sessions
We are also working on pre-recorded class with helpful exercises, for those whose schedules vary or who would prefer to spread the class out in short segments over multiple days.
Sign up here to be notified when the self-paced version launches!

3000th bird enters the Phoenix Landing
adoption program
|
|
|
Meet Spike. Spike is a 30 year old female Congo African Grey. She is also the 3000th bird to enter our adoption program. She has already moved to a home that hopes to adopt her, and is adjusting just fine. Parrots are so resilient.
To date, we have not yet had a parrot enter our program who hasn't been able to adjust to a new home. We are certain this is due to how intelligent, social, and adaptable parrots are, by nature.
Good luck in your new home, Spike. It sounds like she has already stolen her new family's hearts.

Helping people
Want to help your neighbors during this time, but aren't sure how? Or, perhaps you have lost your job, applied for unemployment, and aren't sure where else to go for help. The
United Way's 211 program has information about a large variety of programs to help individuals make rent or find housing, pay utilities, put food on the table, and more.
Helping birds and other pets
Want to help others with pets who may be struggling now? Check with
your local food banks to see if they accept donations of pet supplies. Many do! Pick up a few extra pet supplies to donate. And, if they do not accept pet supplies, consider giving some pet supplies to your local shelter. Unfortunately, shelters may be seeing an increase in relinquishments as people struggle to make ends meet.

TGIF Parrot Lunch Discussions!
|
|
|
Let's do lunch on Fridays! Is there a better way to celebrate getting to Friday than talking about parrots with Phoenix Landing friends?
Here's how it will work: We'll choose an article, blog post, podcast, or video about parrots to read or watch in advance, and then come together to discuss it via Zoom on Fridays at noon.
We'll start with a few articles and a video on behavior and the nature of parrots. Again, if you sign up, please read or watch the material in advance.

How are Stay Home orders impacting Phoenix Landing?
|
|
|
Thank you for your patience with us! Like so many other animal organizations, the necessary COVID19 precautions in place have greatly slowed adoptions. In fact, Stay Home orders are now in place in all of the states in which we operate. People are home more, and want to adopt! But, moving a bird at this time would put our adopting families, foster homes, families having to part with their birds, transport volunteers, and others, in contact with one another, which might chance exposing someone to someone else who is asymptomatic, and would also be violating state and local orders.
At this time, we are only bringing new birds in to the program if it is an absolute emergency.
Our conference and classes are going online. Our birthday party is postponed. We appreciate those who are continuing to foster birds for us! Only a handful of volunteers are coming out and caring for the parrots at the adoption center, and those volunteers either work solo or with one other person, adhering to social distancing protocols.

Toy Parts in the Helping Parrots store
|
|
|
Made of pine, and easy to chip away at, because of the side slits, even many picky chewers will happily shred Groovy Blocks! They come in three different sizes, and each pack has an assortment of colors. Add to them to a DIY toy, or put them in a foraging bowl or bucket as a foot toy. Fun for everybirdie!
