Teacher Tidbit Responses: Class Pet Pics
Thanks to everyone who shared their adorable class pet pics! Our favorite pic was submitted by Erin Lea-Dougherty, an art teacher at Westerly Creek Elementary:

"In the art room at WCE, students earn class points, 'carrots' for following our class rules: Take care of self, others and stuff. When a class has earned all 12 carrots, Pickles the art bunny pays them a visit. Students get to pet and hold Pickles and whisper their wishes for the world in his ear. You will see kindergartners adoring him in this picture.

One kinder told me their wish they told Pickles: 'I wish people would be as nice to each other as we are being to Pickles!'"

This Week's Top 5 Things to Know
Resources to Prepare Your Students for Online-Only Assessments
As you know, students in first through 12th grade will transition to online-only administration of the ACCESS for English Language Learners (ELLs) 2.0 assessment in January 2019. To help educators provide online speaking and writing opportunities to their students, the Education Technology and Library Services (EdTech) team has released a menu of technology integration options and a Technology Integration Schoology course. Additionally, WIDA has practice assessments available.

EdTech representatives are also available for individualized support with technology integration by providing your classroom with:
  • Digital learning experiences aligned with ELD curriculum.
  • Student and teacher access to digital tools in all four domains of language.
  • Increased student readiness for the technology components of the ACCESS 2.0 assessment.
If you need support or have questions, contact Lisa Lund.
Student Perception Survey Update: Second Administration Option
Thanks to input from teachers regarding the Student Perception Survey (SPS) window, all teachers will have the opportunity to opt in to a second SPS administration that will occur in the spring. Please review the following additional information regarding this option:
  • All teachers will participate in the fall survey window.
  • Teachers will be able to view their results from the fall survey prior to deciding whether they will opt in for the spring SPS administration.
  • By opting in for the spring SPS administration, teachers agree that their data from both windows will be aggregated for the end-of-year SPS score.
Stay tuned for more information on how to opt in.

DPS Myth Busters
Myth Buster: What is DPS doing to train teams on how to deal with trauma in schools?
Question:
Our teachers in middle and high school are dealing with high levels of trauma. What is the district doing to support and train staff to deal with trauma?
-- Teacher at Martin Luther King, Jr. Early College

Answer: Our new trauma-informed practices team offers trainings for district and school staff to learn more about what trauma is, how it can impact students and adults, and how to implement trauma informed practices in the school setting. All educators, regardless of role or site, are invited to attend this training in order to better see our students' experiences as a lens for how to best meet their needs.

Talk to your school leader about setting up a time for your school to receive Trauma Informed Practices training. Your school leader can email [email protected] to schedule a training or to learn more about trauma-informed practices. -- The Student Equity and Opportunity (SEO) Team
