ADOTS Weekly Special Update
March 26, 2020
A weekly roundup of information, updates, and recommended ministry resources.
Socially Connected!
"This has not taken the Lord by surprise, and it gives us an incredible opportunity to live in faith toward God, in love toward our neighbors, and in service toward our communities. We are motivated by love, not fear.  We are being encouraged to practice social distancing, but it doesn’t mean we have to be socially disconnected !" -Archbishop Foley Beach
Notes from Online Church with Fr. Aaron Wright
by Rachel Moorman with Aaron Wright
With all the possibilities of technical problems, of miscues, user error, and other issues that can pop up, we still decided to go live. Because at Old North Abbey we already deal with those issues on any given Sunday. In fact, it’s precisely why we decided to go with live services. As I processed through all the things that could “go wrong” with going live, I realized that those were essential parts of worshiping together anyway.

What if people prayed at the same time, out loud, right in the middle of the Prayers of the People? What if the reader forgot to read the text at the right time? What if we didn’t get a song just right? What if we read a collect out of sync?

Well… we already do that. It’s what makes it church. It’s what I love about worship. It means that we lean in on something bigger than what we can pull off on a Sunday. It means that we can laugh at our attempts and be in awe of God’s grace to meet us through our human efforts. It means, that for us, it was a time of joy. Will it get old? Sure. We aren’t meant for worshiping this way. A screen is not a person. The passing of the peace can’t be done the best through a screen. We still need the sounds of feet on the wooden floors, the children flooding our pews at the passing of the peace, the singing that fills that quaint little space. But, honestly, this last Sunday was amazing. It was the best we could do.

It wasn’t easy though. It took a good deal of planning. So, let me tell you how we pulled off Sunday worship at Old North Abbey, live and online...
Helping the Homeless and Needy Now
by Rachel Moorman
Helping the Homeless
“The homeless population has a certain amount of fear, like everybody. Often the chronically homeless are already at higher risk. They are already used to being on the fringe of society to begin with. They aren’t rich enough to travel, so may not be as exposed to the virus. But they experience the same fears. Practicing basic kindness is the best practice.

We’re coming out of the end of winter. Normally 100-200 people could be in our local center. But with social distancing, we can’t serve many people at one time. This is affecting everyone. People can’t congregate. So the homeless have nowhere to go except under tarp.

Homeless ministries and organizations are greatly in need of healthy volunteers. They also need specific items, so contact local services to get a list before purchasing. They are often running low on specific items related to hygiene, clothing, food, basic needs.” -Fr. Dale Hall

Local Food Donations
“Our local food ministry has set up mobile drop off points. They have provided a list of desperately needed supplies for seniors and those less fortunate. You can pick some off the list at the grocery store and drop off on the way home. Churches can help by publicizing their local lists and drop off locations. Most local communities have these ministries, which are in acute need right now.” -Cn. Greg Goebel
