Number Fluency in the 21st Century  (K-2)

How do we help students progress to computational fluency in the early grades? This is arguably one of the most important goals for teachers.  Do you remember completing endless work sheets, timed tests, and flash card drills as we attempted to “master” math facts as children? We had to memorize facts in order to be recognized as high achievers.  This led to most of us believing that fluency in math is just speed and accuracy.

Well, fluency is much more than that! Now there is tons of research suggesting different ways to learn math facts.  These different approaches and routines have the promise of greater student engagement and success. In 21st century fluency, students demonstrate flexibility in the methods they choose, understand and explain these methods, and produce accurate answers efficiently.

You will learn many promising routines that can help support TK-2 students in the acquisition of strategies leading to acceleration of math fluency. You will walk away with a renewed vision of number fluency for the 21st century.  You will also explore some powerful ways to support your students as they develop mathematically robust, flexible understandings of facts and beyond with the ultimate goal of helping them become confident and competent mathematical thinkers.
