I wanted to give you an update on the 2020 Symposium. Ramona Robertson and John Byrd have been working tirelessly to reconcile our books and hopefully, put the 2020 symposium behind us and move forward. Please keep in mind, we did not have to pay any costs to the hotel, and we are only looking at total symposium income, expenses and profit/loss. This is not a full accounting as there are a few items yet to be completed.
Registration payments/refunds:
All symposium registration refunds have been issued except for a couple of minor issues that will not affect total income/expenses.
Vendor Booths and sponsorships:
Good News! We are starting 2021 with booths totaling $84,500 and additional sponsorships totaling $23,500 for a grand total of $108,000. Of the 56 paid vendors, JusticeTrax, STACS DNA, and Promega donated their booth costs or a portion of their booth cost to ASCLD. In addition, 20 vendors asked to have their booth costs moved to 2021. THANK YOU!
Of the remaining vendors, 5 vendors did not respond and therefore their booths were moved to the 2021 symposium books and 28 requested refunds.
Donations:
Total donations to ASCLD, from either Vendors or ASCLD members: $13,268.25
2020 Symposium Costs:
As of the date of this writing, there were expenses totaling $94,853.57 for services already rendered to the 2020 Symposium. Some of these expenses (not an inclusive list) included Kinsley Meeting Management Services to manage the Symposium, MiMedia Productions for audio/video services, C-1 Trade Show Services to manage the Exhibit Hall, EventMobi for our symposium mobile app services, ASCLD Store Items, etc. Finally, there are still two or three outstanding expenses that we anticipate paying in the next couple of weeks to include shipping items originally designated for the 2020 Symposium in Denver to the 2021 Symposium in Boston.
Keynote Speakers:
All keynote speakers have agreed to present at our 2021 Symposium. Their speaking fees will move into the accounting for 2021.
Leadership Academy:
The Leadership Academies continued with their on-line classes. The instructors are determining how and when the capstone is going to take place.
ASCLD does not yet have a final financial statement from the symposium; however, we hope to have a final balance sheet by the June 17, 2020 virtual Annual Meeting. Although we may not have the normal income in this year’s budget from the symposium, we have money in our accounts to cover anticipated bills and are continuing to move forward. The goal of the Laboratories and Educators Alliance Program (LEAP) is to facilitate collaborative research between academia and forensic science laboratories. This joint effort between the American Society of Crime Lab Directors (ASCLD) and the Council of Forensic Science Educators (COFSE) identifies forensic science needs and provides a platform for laboratories, researchers, and students to seek projects aligning with their mutual research capabilities.
