It is official, Bear has been sworn in!

K9 Bear has recently joined the investigations division of the Contra Costa County District Attorney's Office.

Bear is a "Facility Dog" who will be working with victims of crime to provide them comfort and support while they navigate what can sometimes be a very scary and overwhelming justice system. 

Some of Bear's primary responsibilities will include sitting with children during interviews as well as accompanying victims to court when they testify.

We are very happy to welcome Bear to the team!

School Is In!   Please Drive Carefully.

Contra Costa County Public Works encourages all road users to be extra careful as they travel to and from school this year.

According to the Contra Costa County Office of Education, there are 177,770 K-12 students enrolled in 285 public schools in 18 school districts located throughout Contra Costa County. Private school enrollment adds over 19,000 students in Contra Costa County as well.

After a long summer and with the excitement of a new school year, children may not b e fully aware of their surroundings as they walk, bicycle, or bus to school. That's why we are asking parents and other drivers to leave early, stay alert, and be extra cautious in school zones.

The first few weeks of school can be extra stressful as everyone gets back into their school time routines. Please be respectful of others and the rules of the road during this critical time.

For some helpful tips for parents, caregivers, children, and drivers, the National Safety Council has provided a lot of helpful material on sharing the road, including back to school safety tips this busy school year.

Also, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has resources for back to school safety. We encourage you to sit down with your child and go over some road safety rules and tips.

CALFRESH NOW AVAILABLE TO OLDER, DISABLED SSI RECIPIENTS

The State of California recently expanded its CalFresh food program to include older adults and individuals with disabilities who receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI).
This decision will help many who are currently struggling to make ends meet, and provide them access to healthy and nutritious foods.

Everyone needs to prepare for wildfires. 
Help update the community wildfire protection plan for Contra Costa County.
We want your input on wildfire risks and hazards. Share your concerns and local knowledge. Give us your opinion on recommended strategies to reduce risks.
 
A Community Wildfire Protection Plan (CWPP) is a collaboratively developed plan that identifies wildland fire hazards, prioritizes ways to reduce those hazards and recommends measures for homeowners and communities to reduce ignitability of structures.
 
The Diablo Fire Safe Council is working with local fire departments, agencies, homeowner groups and others to update the existing Contra Costa County CWPP.

Pavement Preservation Work in Brentwood

Contra Costa County Public Works will begin construction on the  Local Streets and Roads Preservation Project. 

The project consists of pavement preservation work in Brentwood:

A micro-surface treatment on Vasco Road in the Brentwood area between the Brushy
Creek Bridge and the Alameda County line. The work also includes replacing traffic stripes and pavement markings. The total project length is about 7.2 miles.

Construction will begin mid-September 2019. C onstruction will be complete in late October 2019, barring unforeseen circumstances.

Construction operations will occur primarily at night, with some day work expected, and will be scheduled to minimize impacts to commute traffic. 

Expect delays up to 15 minutes during construction.

Not everyone can make it to the polls on Election Day, which is why you have the ability to vote early both in person and by mail.
 
Voting by mail gives you flexibility in casting and returning your ballot. It's simple too. Ballots are mailed 29 days before Election Day along with voting instructions and information on how to return your ballot. 

Place your marked ballot in the return envelope and seal it. Be sure to sign the addressed return envelope. Without a signature the ballot cannot be counted.
 
Become A Vote-By-Mail Voter!
You can become a permanent vote-by-mail voter and have a ballot mailed to you before every election. To become a permanent vote-by-mail voter: http://registertovote.ca.gov/ 
 
Complete the Online Registration Form and select "Yes" in the vote-by-mail box.

The Board of Supervisors receives valuable input and community participation from numerous citizen advisory boards on a range of issues. Boards usually meet monthly on a regular basis.

Candidates for these positions must live in District 3 or any specified boundary area for special districts. District 3 is comprised of the cities of Antioch, Oakley and Brentwood, and the unincorporated communities of Blackhawk, Diablo, Bethel Island, Byron, Knightsen and Discovery Bay.

Mental Health Commission

To review and assess the community's mental health needs, services, facilities, and special problems, in order to advise the Board of Supervisors concerning local mental health services and programs.
 
The Commission meets on the first Wednesday of each month at 4:30 p.m. located at 550 Ellinwood Way, Pleasant Hill.
 
County Service Area, P-6 Citizen Advisory Committee (Discovery Bay)

To make reports and recommendations to the Board of Supervisors on extended police protection services which shall include, but not limited to, enforcement of the State Vehicle Code where authorized by law, crime prevention, and litter control.
 
The Committee meets quarterly at 6:00p.m. located at the Discovery Bay Community Center, 1601 Discovery Bay Blvd. in Discovery Bay.
 
Knightsen Town Advisory Council

The Knightsen TAC advises the District Supervisor on land issues and planning matters affecting the Knightsen community.
 
The Knightsen TAC may also advise the District Supervisor on services which are or may be provided to the community by Contra Costa County or other local government agencies. Such services include, but are not limited to, public health, safety, welfare, public works, and planning.
 
The Knightsen TAC will meet on the 3rd Tuesday of every month at 7:30pm located at the Knightsen Garden Club, 3067 Knightsen Avenue in Knightsen.
 
Library Commission

The Commission serves in an advisory capacity to the Board of Supervisors and the County Librarian; provides a forum for the community to provide input concerning Library operations, and recommends proposals to the Board of Supervisors and the County Librarian which may improve the Library.
 
The Commission meets on the 4th Thursday of every other month at 7pm located at 777 Arnold Drive in Martinez.

Assessment Appeals Board

The Assessment Appeals Board conducts impartial hearings on property assessment disputes between taxpayers and the county assessor. Based on the evidence presented at these hearings, the appeals board determined the value of the disputed property or determines other matters of property tax assessment within the board's jurisdiction.
 
Qualifications:
Applicants should possess five or more years of professional experience in California as one of the following: licensed real estate broker, attorney, certified public accountant (CPA) or public accountant, property appraiser accredited by a nationally recognized professional organization, property appraiser certified by the Office of Real Estate Appraisers, or property appraiser certified by the State Board of Equalization.
 
Compensation:
This is a volunteer position. Assessment Appeals Board members are compensated for their time at hearings and reimbursed for their mileage to attend assessment appeals hearings.
 
The Assessment Appeals Board meets every Thursday at 9:00 a.m. located at 651 Pine Street, Room 107 in Martinez.
