As you know, the Camp Montessori early registration deadline has moved to May 15. The information below outlines our new payment options. If you have already registered for camp and would like to switch your payment schedule to the new option, please contact Tracey .

Previous payment options:
Option 1: Payment of 50% at the time of registration and 50% by June 1 -or-
Option 2: Payment of 20% at the time of registration and monthly increments starting in May.

For the summer of 2020, we are offering the following:

  1. Upon registration, there will be a $150 camp deposit due per family. This deposit will be applied to your family's camp balance. No additional payments will be required until the week before the start of camp (i.e., June 8 if camp runs a scheduled*).
  2. Payments will start on June 8, and 10% of the balance will be due each week prior to your child's camp session or sessions until the balance is paid in full.
  3. Payment for each session must be paid in full before the child attends the upcoming week of camp. Should you want to pay your balance sooner, you can easily do so though Ultracamp or by contacting Tracey directly.

* Full refunds will be issued for any part of camp that is canceled due to COVID-19.

NEWS & NOTES
Magnus Updates from Nurse Kathy

It's time to complete the annual health and safety requirements in the Magnus Health System . If your child is enrolled in Camp Montessori for this summer, WMS for the upcoming school year and/or Extended Day programs at WMS, you may have already received an automatic email requesting completion of these requirements.

We hope you and your family are safe and healthy at this time. We understand you may not be able to make appointments with your student’s physician to complete some of the health forms due to the current strain on the health-care system and Delaware's state-wide stay-at-home order. We are not asking you to focus on retrieving/completing health appraisals, immunization records and allergy/asthma action plans right now. However, we would like to ask that you do your best to complete all of the other electronic forms available in our school’s Magnus Health system.

We greatly appreciate you submitting all of the forms that you can complete today! With your help, we will be able to stay as close to our “normal” enrollment timeline as possible.

Please update Nurse Kathy at [email protected] with any future appointment dates so that she may be able to adjust dates and manage system alerts. As always, please don't hesitate to contact her with any questions or concerns.

Deadlines:
For campers: All requirements are due by May 15.
For those not attending camp: All requirements are due by July 1.

Thanks in advance for your time and attention!
Update for Third through Eighth-Grade Families Regarding ERB Testing
If you've looked ahead at the school calendar, you will notice that next week is the week we typically conduct standardized testing (the ERB) for third through eighth-grade students. While we value the data we gather through this test, we have come to the conclusion that the ERB will not be administered this year. Currently, we are scheduled to return to the WMS campus in mid-May. Though the company has provided an extended year as an option to conduct the ERB, because we need five days to administer the tests, we would be limited to testing the very same week we are to return. This would not allow us to introduce the tests by issuing practice tests and other processes that ensure a positive testing environment.

Rest assured that we are continuing to assess each and every WMS student. It is part of every lesson and interaction we have with students. Our most effective assessments are formative - those that we conduct through each and every lesson. We observe the ways in which children approach their learning. We listen to them explain their thinking, ask their questions, and interact with teachers and students. We look at samples of their work and administer brief assessments to guide teachers as they determine the next steps in their learning.

Our commitment to assessment is ongoing and will continue. For this year, as many of the things in our lives have shifted so has the ability to conduct the standardized assessments. We will certainly plan to conduct these assessments in the 2020-21 school year, and in the meantime, what we know is that your children will continue to learn and grow, and we will continue to inform you about their progress in meeting their learning goals.
Celebrate Earth Week with WMS

Prior to the closure of our campus, Wilmington Montessori School's Eco Student Council was hard at work planning the school's celebration of the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, along with Earth Week.

The teachers on our Eco Team came together to complete these plans and have created a week of activities for families to enjoy at home. Here are a few of their ideas. (Classroom teachers will share additional age-appropriate activities with students as well.)

Monday What’s in your trash?
  • Start with an empty trash can in the morning, then weigh it at the end of the day. What did you put in there? Could anything have been recycled, composted or reused in another way?
  • Wear your trash today. Carry a bag and put anything you would put in the trash into your bag.

Tuesday:  Learn more about how to Reduce, Reuse, Recycle!
  • Reduce the amount of clean water that is wasted in your home by turning off the faucet as you brush your teeth.
  • Learn about what can be recycled in your state and make signs for your recycling bin so your family members know what they can recycle.
  • Is there anything in your recycling bin that you could use for something else? Make something new from what was almost trash or create an ecobrick.

Wednesday (50th anniversary of Earth Day!): Observe and enjoy nature!
  • Choose a small area in your yard and make a circle around it using hula hoop or rope. What living things do you see in your circle?
  • Choose a tree in your yard or neighborhood. Sketch it, measure it, make a bark rubbing, look at its leaves, flowers and seeds.
  • Take a sensory walk: notice all that you can see, hear, smell, feel and taste.

Thursday:   Pick up trash!
  • Make your neighborhood better by helping to clean it up. Bring a trash bag and gloves, and with a family member’s help, pick up any trash you see.
  • Tape a drawing or note on your trash can the day that your trash pickup occurs to thank those that help keep our neighborhoods trash-free every day.

Friday:   Clothes and Toys Sort
  • Go through your old toys and clothes. If anything is too small or you don’t use it anymore, could you give it to a younger friend or an organization like Goodwill so it can be reused again instead of added to the landfill? Our school also hopes to continue our used shoe drive when we return.

Saturday:  Power down!
  • Try to put all devices down for the day and enjoy life without any unnecessary electricity! Be sure to turn off any unneeded lights, and get in the habit of unplugging any appliances and chargers that aren’t being used right now to avoid “energy vampire” drain!

Photo and video challenge - Be sure to take photos of your activities and tag #WMSathome!
Primary Maker Afternoon - Thursday, April 23 at 2:45 p.m.
Join us next Thursday (4/23) at 2:45 p.m. for our virtual Primary/Kindergarten Maker Afternoon.

Students in the 3-6 Program have been learning about plants and pollinators during their Maker (STEAM) Studio classes. The children are invited to make something related to the topic to share with the group, or to simply come check out what others have created. Toddler/Primary STEAM Coach Alyssa Novello will also be reading The Magic Garden by Lemniscates.

Watch your classroom communications for the Zoom link, and contact Alyssa with any questions you might have!
Middle School Rube Goldberg Machines

In Maker (STEAM) Studio class, middle-school students were challenged to create Rube Goldberg machines at home. In the videos below, Jack and Maya share their results, including some trial and error, as well as some laughter!
