Fourth Sunday of Easter

Abundant life is promised to those who follow Jesus. But what is meant by abundant life? Some Christians, and much of contemporary American culture, interpret an abundant life to mean the "good life" of many fine things, an opulent lifestyle. Much of our economy and leisure time revolves around consumerism-shopping and buying things which we hope will make us happier and our lives better. But an abundance of things does not necessarily lead to an abundant life.

What does Jesus mean when he says that he came so that we may have an abundant life? Psalm 23 provides us with a good illustration of what Jesus is promising to his followers. The psalm imagines an abundant life not in material terms but in relational terms. An abundant life is one lived in the presence of God, in the company of the Lord. Whether one is in green pastures or the darkest valley, there is nothing to want, because God is present. We are in the gracious and generous care of our Lord through times of material abundance and in times of want and scarcity. This relationship between our Lord and us who are his followers is a relationship with one who knows us abundantly, who knows us by name, and who knows what we truly need to be fulfilled. The image of Jesus as our shepherd reminds us that he is with us at all times, and our relationship with him provides us all we need. [Sundays and Seasons, 2020]

It may be challenging to think about abundance when we are living exiled lives during the pandemic, but Jesus is with us. May this liminal time, that is between what was (the known normal) and what will be (the unknown future), be a gift of real sabbath rest and fasting from the busyness and consumption of things that do not truly sustain us or lead to an abundant life. May your relationship with and reliance on Jesus grow abundantly during this time when so many focus on scarcity.

Alleluia! Christ is risen. The Lord is risen indeed. Alleluia!

April is National Donate Life Month

This had been planned for the first eNews in April but because of the combination of Easter and Covid-19, I decided to wait until things quieted down.

Donate Life of New England

  • There are more than 120,000 people currently on the transplant wait list.
  • Every 12 minutes a new person is added to the list.
  • Everyday 21 people die waiting for an organ transplant.
  • Last year alone, organ donors saved 28,000 lives.

- A Donor Family Story
On May 2, 2018 my daughter Amy Elizabeth Dowd was removed from life support. Several days prior, we discussed with the medical team that we hoped that Amy could be an organ donor. We were immediately contacted by a coordinator with Donate Life New England. He had confirmed that Amy indicated on her license that she wanted to be an organ donor. We would have donated even if she wasn't.
When the final decision was made, and two matches were found, Amy was removed from most of the machines and a quilt, made especially for organ donors, was placed over her body and we started the long walk to the operating room. There was no honor walk at the time. Four people were allowed to be with her until she took her last breath. We were informed a little while later that her kidneys were viable. I was notified a few months later that the recipients were an older man and a young woman both in New England. Her liver was donated for research.
All of us who loved Amy take some comfort in knowing that she lives in two people who now have their lives back. Something beautiful came out of this horrific event.
The aftercare programs continue to honor loved ones in many ways. A remembrance brunch was held in NY for families to come together and share our stories. UVM created a Tree of Remembrance with a leaf for each of the recent donors, which eventually will be sent to the family as new donors are added.
I cannot say enough about all of the people involved. Everyone at University of Vermont Medical Center and the Donation Coordinators couldn't have been nicer or more respectful, and truly honored Amy for her gift.
I am sharing this because it is so important to the 120,000 on the waiting list for us all to become organ donors.

Please consider sharing the gift of life - it is the ultimate gift of love.

- A Recipient's Story
My Experience as an Organ Recipient by Gayle Gurney

In the summer of 2004, I was diagnosed with heart failure, related to the chemotherapy I had received for non Hodgkins lymphoma. I could hardly believe what my cardiologist was telling me. The disease progression was slowed by medication, but I knew I was not going to enjoy much time here with my family and friends. In 2009, we retired and moved full time to Melvin Village. New Doctors, new hospitals. My cardiologist, Dr. Richard Patten, luckily, turned out to be a heart failure specialist, and he quickly began to guide me through the testing required and then sent me from CMC to Tufts Medical Center, in Boston. What a wonderful place of healing and support! Because of my blood type, AB negative, I was lucky again to have a very short wait for a donor heart. Now, almost 6 years later, I am able to lead a pretty normal life, all thanks to a selfless donation by an anonymous donor's family. I urge all of you to take the time to become donors. It's easily done, at the Motor Vehicle Office. Your driver's license will be marked in the lower right corner with a small red heart. If you don't have a license, have an ID card made. Donate Life!

  • There is no charge to the family or your estate for any of the services related to your organ and tissue donation.
  • There is no age limit for donation. And one day you or someone you love may need one. Here is a list what can be transplanted: heart, lungs, kidneys, valves, liver, pancreas, intestines, bone, veins, connective tissue (ligaments and tendons), tissue, eyes.
  • I know of three people in Tuftonboro/Wolfeboro currently waiting for a transplant or have a loved one who is waiting.
  • The flag being flown at the church is Amy's flag. It is flown at a hospital where an organ donation has taken place, and is then given to the family.

L.I.F.E. Minstries Food Pantry Update
Deb Bunting
Judy Cole

This month Deb Bunting joins Judy Cole as All Saints' L.I.F.E. Ministries board members. Deb serves as the Outreach Counselor for the school district and member of the Governor Wentworth Area Volunteer Coop (GWAVCoop) advisory board. She has worked enthusiastically as a volunteer at the pantry in the early stages of the pandemic and looks forward to her new role.

The L.I.F.E. Ministries Food Pantry is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization blessed by the generosity of many local churches, businesses, schools, clubs and individuals who faithfully support those in need in our community. Food donations are passed directly to our clients, and monetary donations are used to purchase supplemental food products at local grocery stores and the New Hampshire Food Bank. The board comprises two representatives from each of the seven local area sponsoring churches: All Saints, First Baptist, First Christian, and First Congregational, Wolfeboro; Melvin Village Community, Tuftonboro; Saint Katherine Drexel, Alton; Tuftonboro Methodist, Tuftonboro, and three at-large community members.

During the pandemic the pantry is open on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays via drive through with physical distancing protocols. During this time, the pantry can no longer accept food donations.

FROM THE MUSIC CORNER by Holly Simons
Welcome to Good Shepherd Sunday 2020, with beloved music on that theme, both current and pre-recorded, linked to our website.   Be sure to take some moments to reflect on our Lord's protective care and gentleness as you choose what to listen to.   Our friend and choir member  Michelle Gardner composed and recorded a lovely song " Come Back To Me" , which is included in the website offerings linked here:  Worship
May our Lord bless and keep you in the ongoing discernments of "How now shall we live?"   He shepherds us through every moment, every day.   Soli Deo Gloria!

Self Care

This is another day, O Lord. I know not what it will bring forth, but make me ready, Lord, for whatever it may be. If I am to stand up, help me to stand bravely. If I am to sit still, help me to sit quietly. If I am to lie low, help me to do it patiently. And if am to do nothing, let me do it gallantly. Make these words more than words, and give me the Spirit of Jesus. Amen.

Scripture makes clear that the physical, emotional, social, and spiritual well-being of humans are closely interconnected. As such, the Church acts in the grace of God for the health and wholeness of all. This ministry is based on Jesus' constant witness of concern and care for the sick, the unloved, the broken, and the lost.

As we find ourselves experiencing difficult times, we receive God's grace, expressed sometimes in an experience of healing and sometimes through the strength that comes in the bearing of trials. God's gracious activity of healing is to be seen both as part of the proclaiming of the good news and as an outworking of the presence of the Spirit in the life of the Church.

9 Ways to Practice Self-Care During Difficult Times:
  1. Practice gratitude rather than guilt
  2. Focus on simple things: slowly sip a cup of coffee or tea, look up at the sky to notice the color and clouds, light a candle
  3. Sing or hum a tune you love
  4. Visit an accessible place that soothes you
  5. Breathe in God's love and peace; exhale tension and fear
  6. Be aware of and limit your online or TV news access
  7. Take in the beauty of art, music, poetry
  8. Join in a community group or effort that shares your concerns
  9. Remember the invitation of Jesus to "Come and rest a while" (Mark 6:31)
If you or a loved one is facing illness, death, or another emergency, please contact the church office (603)569-3453 or Pastor Bill pastorbillpetersen@gmail.com so we can pray for your needs and concerns.

Connect With God & With Others
"...have you ever found God in church? I never did. I just found a bunch of folks hoping for him to show. Any God I ever felt in church I brought in with me. And I think all the other folks did too. They come to church to share God, not find God." -Alice Walker

The church is where God's people-YOU-are. While we are in exile in our homes, we don't need to go to church to find God, because when we are church together on-line we share God. There are many ways to connect, to see, hear and share God online at All Saints'...

Not sure how to connect via Zoom?
During this time of disconnect due to Covid-19, All Saints' is utilizing Zoom for many gatherings.
From Sunday Virtual Coffee Hour, to Bible Studies, Zoom will allow our congregation to connect live and face-to-face, while following the social guidelines set in place by our government. Here are the steps for participating via computer or telephone:

  1. You will find a link to the event and an I.D. number and password. (Note: The FIRST time you open a Zoom link, it will prompt you to download the app. This is FREE. Please follow the instructions given to install.)
  2. Each Zoom event that you open will ask for the I.D. number and password.
  3. For any video/visual participation, you will need a camera either on your phone, or on your computer. If you do not have one, the invitation email you receive will provide instructions for calling in on your phone.
  4. We encourage participants to mute yourself unless you have an opportunity to speak. Household noises can often times be a distraction to others. If you would like to get your Zoom account set up ahead of time, visit https://zoom.us/.

Troubleshooting:
  1. If you log in and no one else is in the gathering, double check to make sure you have the right date and time; if you do, it's likely that you've clicked/entered the wrong link/address. Each meeting has its own link/address and only works for that gathering. Note: some gatherings use a "wait room" and the host will let you in.
  2. If you get connected but can't seem to connect audio, try using "chat" (link at the bottom of the screen) to ask for help.
  3. If you can only see one person, try clicking on the "speaker view" button on the top and switch it to "gallery view" to see all participants.
  4. If your internet connection fails and you get knocked off, simply join back in. It happens.
  5. If you're stuck, contact the event host/leader.

Thank You for Giving During This Time of Pandemic

Thank you for all who have continued to support the work of All Saints during this time. You may make contributions by mail, using your financial institution's automated check writing service, or secure online giving via  Donate

Creator of all we enjoy, we give you thanks for the countless people you have gathered to do your work as All Saints' Wolfeboro. We thank you for your Holy Spirit inspiring some as they longed for this church, others as they built this church and still others as they lovingly and boldly led this church through times of abundance and times of scarcity. Help us to be bold as we model giving of time and money during this time. Make our generous giving a symbol of both our faith and our gratitude. We pray in the name of your son, Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior. Amen.
You Make A Difference

Is there an exceptional All Saints' volunteer we should recognize? Please share any recognition recommendations with our Senior Warden Carolyn Sundquist or Pastor Bill to bring to the Vestry for consideration. Who can we give thanks for the blessings they have shared with our congregation?
