Get Connected                                                                                             Issue 7
Greetings!

Hopefully by now you have received your visa (or will have it soon), and registered for orientation events https://globalmaryland.umd.edu/offices/international-students-scholar-services/international-student-orientation
, packed your bags, and learned how to get from the airport to your new neighborhood. Now take some time to think about something fun! Getting to know other students and finding a community on campus is one of the most important factors to a successful and enjoyable experience for new students, but it does take some initiative on your part. There are so many ways to get involved! You will discover more when you start taking classes and get to know the campus, but here are some ideas to give you an overview and a chance to start checking out what might interest you:

Today's Tip: Get connected at UMD

ISSS Activities

Orientation Week  is a great place to start meeting people - join us for the DC Excursion, Lunch Reception, Ice Cream Social or IKEA Trip...or simply say hi to someone new at a session.

During the semester, our office holds  International Coffee Hour  every Wednesday, from 2:30 pm- 3:30 pm in the Global Crossroads Lounge, H.J. Patterson. This weekly get-together is a great way to meet new people and reconnect with friends over some free coffee, tea, and snacks.

Various organizations on campus also organize  trips  that help you explore the local area. Look out for announcements!  Events are published in our newsletter  ISSS News  that you will receive weekly as well as our Facebook page  . Make sure to like and follow us to stay informed.

Student Organizations

At the University of Maryland, we have over 300 student organizations and we are sure there is one for you. Check out International Student Union to connect with the international students on campus. Browse student clubs and contact info at  https://thestamp.umd.edu/student_org_resource_center_sorc  or you can talk to student representatives at the massive  First Look Fair , usually scheduled about two weeks after classes start.

Career Services

Are you interested in getting an on-campus job? An internship? Preparing yourself for your future job search process should start as early as your first semester.
