                     GROWING OUR CHOIR
Our small choir of dedicated volunteers raise their voices in songs of praise and worship every Sunday during the Church year. Communal singing is one of the ways we express our deepest feelings about life, God, and Spirit. Joining our voices together brings great joy both to the participants and to the congregation.

This Fall we are offering the congregation of Union Church an opportunity to experience how singing in the choir can enrich their spiritual lives.

On three separate Sundays this month and next we will have a volunteer choir.

The only requirement is to attend our brief rehearsal at 9:00 a.m. on the Sunday when you would like to sing. No previous experience or the ability to read music is required!

On this coming Sunday Oct.8, we will have a men's choir. The anthem, "Go and Shine God's Light" is in a lively Calypso style and expresses the joy of giving to the world the love we have received from God.

On Oct.15, the women of the church are invited to sing a beautiful setting of the 23 rd
psalm by Stuart Townend. The lovely melody has a folk song quality and is easy to learn.

On Nov.5, All Saint's Sunday, we will have an inter-generational choir. Families of the church are invited to sing together. Children are especially welcome. The two part anthem," Glory Bound", is lots of fun to sing and includes the tune "When the Saints Go Marching In". Children will stay in the sanctuary and the music we sing will be familiar to them.

I hope to see many of you come to sing with us and make a joyful noise unto the Lord!
With gratitude,

Bill Merrill, Music Director

Youth Ministry:  Hike and Fall Fun Day Coming Up!

Our next Youth Ministry event will be our Hike and Fall Fun Day on Saturday, October 14th! We'll gather at 8:00 a.m. at the church, head out for a hike and visit to a local farm, arriving back in Waban by 4:30 p.m. Youth and their families should have received an Evite to this event earlier this week. With questions, or to RSVP, please contact Amy (amy@ucw.org) or Mark Smith.   We hope to see you there!

n  Save the Date -- November 5th:   Please plan to join us the afternoon of November 5th after worship as we work in teams to help neighbors who could use an extra hand with fall yard work and getting ready for winter.  There will be cider and donuts!

Sunday Volunteers -- Can you share a morning with our kids?

From holding one of our infants, to helping little hands make a craft, reading a Bible story, or listening to our youth share about their weeks, there are so many ways to nurture, and share our faith and care with our children and youth.  Please contact Amy at amy@ucw.org if you can share a few Sundays with our children!

n  A special request for Sunday October 22nd :   We are in special need of a few extra volunteers at the church on October 22nd when Pastors Stacy and Amy, and other members of the congregation, will be away at our All-Church Retreat.  If you are planning to stay in the area, and can lend a hand with our little ones that morning, please let Amy (amy@ucw.org) know.  Many thanks!

Gathering of the Christian Ed. And Formation Team - Following worship on October 15th

Our Christian Education and Formation team (CE PACCS) will gather in Amy's office following worship next Sunday.  We'll pray together, share what we see as needs, dreams and priorities for our ministries with kids and families, and plan for the coming months.  If you would like to join this group and discussion, please contact Amy (amy@ucw.org), or come by the meeting next week.  We're grateful for your faithfulness and care for our children and families!

A Time of Quiet and Prayer:
Mondays at 7:30 a.m. in  Memorial Chapel

Living Waters -A Time of Quiet and Prayer:  Mondays at 7:30 a.m. in Memorial Chapel
On Monday mornings, from 7:30 - 8:15 a.m., we gather in the small chapel off the sanctuary for quiet and prayer. This time is called "Living Water" and is based on the passage in John's Gospel where Jesus encounters the Samaritan women at the well (John 4:14). This is a time to drink in the stillness of the peace and presence of God so that we will be filled and will not thirst as we go into the busyness of our week. We begin with 20 minutes of centering/meditative silence.  Afterwards we light candles of prayers for celebrations and/or concerns we may have.  Please join us.

NOTE:   We are also exploring the possibility of a mid-week, noontime - Time of Quiet and Prayer.  If that is something that you think would be a blessing to you, please be in touch with
pastor Stacy.
Registrations are now due

ALL CHURCH RETREAT -
G
ROWING TOGETHER FOR GOOD

Blessed are those who trust in the  Lord whose trust is the Lord.

They shall be like a tree planted by water, sending out its roots by the stream.

It shall not fear when heat comes, and its leaves shall stay green; in the year of drought it is not anxious,  and it does not cease to bear fruit.
(Jeremiah 17: 7-8)

When is the retreat?
Friday, October 20 starting at 6:30 p.m. - Sunday, October 22,
finishing up before noon.

Where is it?
Rolling Ridge Retreat Center in North Andover, 660 Great Pond Rd,
North Andover, MA 01845
, http://www.rollingridge.org/

Why are we doing this?
To celebrate and nourish the rootedness that we have with each other and with our God that enables us to thrive in the midst of the challenges of our time and to also bring forth goodness into the world.  It is a time to have fun.  To enjoy each other and to grow.

Who is it for?
All of us!  We are an inter-generational community where all are beloved and all are invited.   There is a cost associated with the retreat but we do not want that to be a barrier to anyone or any family.  What is most important is that you come so that we can all be together and be nourished by each other's presence.  So make whatever contribution you can, whether that be less than or more than the actual cost.

Book Group -- Multicultural Authors Series
October 31
st (last Tuesday of the month), at 7:00 p.m

As we approach a new season of literary exploration, we are offering a thoughtful collection of multicultural writing by authors representing the varied voices and perspectives of people who view the American experience from the standpoint of displacement and assimilation.
The partial list includes the following: 2016 Pulitzer Prizewinner, The Sympathizer by Viet Than Nguyen (Vietnamese-American), Interpreter of Maladies by Jhumpa Lahiri (Indian-American), 2000 Pulitzer Prize winner, Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe (Nigerian), Breath, Eyes, Memory by Edwidge Danticat (Haitian -American), books by Amy Tan (Chinese-American), Amara Lakhous (Algerian), Katherine Boo (American), and other suggestions from the group.

Our first meeting is on October 31st (last Tuesday of the month), at 7:00 p.m.  Our first book will be The Sympathizer by Viet Than Nguyen, in tandem with the PBS series on the Vietnam War.  For a copy of the book, please get in touch with Stacy (stacy@ucw.org).

Some suggested questions we can ask as we read these books are:  What appeals to me in these multicultural writings? With what do I disagree? How does the book relate to the current climate of divergent views on immigration and a multicultural society? By reading stories different from my own, what universal themes do I see and identify with regarding love, family, loss, spirituality, and resilience in the human journey?

Feel free to invite others to our Book Group.
Thank you, Priscilla, Stacy, and Alan.

The Eliot Church of Newton has sponsored an annual Newton CROP Walk through Church World Service for many years. This year 25% will be divided among: The Newton Sanctuary and Solidarity Collaborative (7 1/2%); the Brighton Alston Food
Pantry (7 1/2%); and CAN-DO (10%) Will you join us in this much needed effort? Or, to lead the Union Church effort contact Mission Committee.
CROP Hunger Walks form the foundation of CWS's work and afford them the flexibility to respond as needed when disasters strike - whether in the near term or for future rebuilding. They have already shipped 450 blankets, 1,272 emergency clean up kits, 57,346 hygiene kits to Houston and an additional 30,000 hygiene kits to Florida. They assure us they will remain in storm- impacted areas helping those most vulnerable for years to come.
The Newton CROP Walk will provide Newton residents an opportunity to make a community-wide statement to our neighbors in the south who have been impacted by Harvey, Irma and other storms that we care for and love them. We encourage churches, synagogues and agencies to form teams of walkers and / or make donations to walkers.

FORJ Candidates Forum:
Monday 10/9 3:30-5 PM
at the
Union
Church in Waban
14 Collins Road in Waban
FORJ -- Families Organizing for Racial Justice -- is delighted to host a panel of three people of color who are candidates in the November election. Anping Shen, Bridget Ray-Canada, and Nicole Castillo will join us to discuss why they decided to run and how to achieve more racial equity in Newton. In order to foster children's involvement, we will prioritize questions from our kids. (This event will be appropriate for children roughly Grade 3 and up).
**Note that FORJ is not partisan and will not endorse candidates, but in a town that has 23 white councilors and only 1 person of color, part of fighting for racial justice is fighting for more representation, and giving more visibility to candidates of color who often have fewer funds and networks than white candidates.
For more information on this event or to get involved in future racial justice activities in Newton, please contact Erica at ericastreitkaplan@yahoo.com or 617-875-6530.
