Reduced Cost Ethics Training for Professional Engineers
To help our members meet their requirements, the New Jersey Society of Professional Engineers has launched a new online ethics training for professional engineers at a reduced cost.
This two-hour online video, presented by the NJSPE counsel Larry Powers, will provide you with the two credits required for the ethics portion of your professional engineer license. Once the video is viewed in its entirety, you will be e-mailed a certificate proving you have met this licensing requirement.

If you have received your renewal for next year and are paying by Purchase Order or Voucher, please send all paper work to NJSPE for a signature. You can mail it to NJSPE, 414 River View Plaza, Trenton, NJ 08611 or you can fax it to 609-393-9891. Thank you for your membership!

NJSPE Call for Continuing Education Presentations for November 2019 and March 2020!
NJ State Board of PE's license renewal deadline is April 30, 2020. NJSPE is presenting two Days of Continuing Education to help PE's attain the credits needed for renewal. If you have a program for presentation, or a suggestion on topics or speakers, please send them by clicking the link below and entering the info. Deadline date for your presentation or idea to be considered in the selection process is Monday, August 19.

Your gas tax dollars at work: NJ speeds up road work projects
A new state law makes some changes to how New Jersey manages transportation construction, an attempt to get projects going more quickly so that people see how their gas-tax money is spent.
New Jersey has raised its gas tax nearly 27 cents a gallon in the last three years, with a nearly 23 cent hike in 2016 followed by a more than 4 cent increase last year. A determination of whether the tax will increase again this year will be made this month.
Greg Lalevee, business manger for International Union of Operating Engineers Local 825, said residents question what they're getting for the higher taxes and acknowledges the Transportation Trust Fund spending "could go better."

OSHA Investigation Slams FIGG for FIU Bridge Collapse

While criticizing numerous parties involved with the ill-fated Florida International University pedestrian bridge project, a new report by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration's Directorate of Construction lays considerable blame upon FIGG Bridge Engineers, the bridge's designer. From failing to assess the risk from widening cracks just prior to collapse, to failing to obtain all of the state-mandated peer reviews of the bridge's design, OSHA's report details a long list of failures before the fatal collapse of March 15, 2018.

NSPE Presses Congress on Pipeline Safety
NSPE is urging members of Congress to act on pipeline safety so gas line explosions, like the one in Massachusetts' Merrimack Valley, don't happen and harm more people.
In comments to the Energy Subcommittee of the House Energy and Commerce Committee on June 19, NSPE expressed strong support for the Leonel Rondon Pipeline Safety Act, and advocated for professional engineers to be in responsible charge of public utility pipeline activities that affect public safety. Removing the engineering licensing exemption for public utility pipelines is an important step in protecting the public from future incidents similar to the Merrimack Valley pipeline explosion.
