WORD for the Week for August 11, 2019
Tenth Sunday After Pentecost
A 9-week worship series: The Gift of Wonder
Week 8
The Gift of Wonder:

This summer, get to know God in a new way. Experience The Gift of Wonder in our 9-week summer worship series beginning June 30.

Can you imagine a God who dances with shouts of joy, laughs when you laugh, loves to play, enjoys life, and invites us to join in the fun? In this series we will explore what it means to delight in God, to set our imaginations free, to return to the rhythm of life, to cultivate gratitude, and more.

Using the book The Gift of Wonder by Christine Aroney-Sine as our guide, every week we will try a new practice for opening ourselves to awe and wonder–to God. Spend the season deepening your wonder in God at Hennepin.
COME AND WORSHIP
Sabbath Beginnings – Sacred Journey – Traditional Worship
WORD for Sabbath Beginnings 8am

Worship Leader: Rev. Dwight Haberman

Holy Communion : "Stay close to the cracks, to the broken places where people weep and cry out in pain. Stay close to the cracks where God’s tears fall and God’s wounds bleed for love of us. Stay close to the cracks where light shines in and grass pushes up through concrete. Stay close to the cracks where weeping wounds open unexpected doorways to healing and wholeness of life." Christine Aroney- Sine “The Gift of Wonders.”

The gift of wonder – found where people weep, are in pain, God’s tears and wounds. The wonders come in unexpected ways. Do you believe it? Trust it? We are born compassionate. Do you believe it? A child is born with that divine spark of compassion, but to keep this spark alive and growing in a world that is often indifferent to pain and suffering, it needs nurturing. Do you believe it?

The Story: Shining Light in the Cracks - CathyAnn Beaty

Reflection: This week in Sacred Journey,  master InterPlay leader, dancer and visual artist, Rev. CathyAnn Beaty visits as Storyteller! The worship series,  The Gift of Wonder  continues as CathyAnn brings her own style and sensitivity to explore shining light in the cracks, and we share Communion. Our scripture for this week describes human life as holding holiness and divine beauty in unadorned cracked pots. Are you willing to be a “crackpot” of grace? Bring a friend and invite someone to share this opportunity to worship in movement and mindfulness. All are welcome to share the journey!
WORD for Traditional Worship 10am

Preaching:    “Shining Light in the Cracks” – Rev. Frenchye Magee

Reflection: The power of compassion…the value of vulnerability…the courage to confront walls that look impenetrable…and the grace to reach for growth…all these are a part of the gift of wonder that come to signify those who know themselves as children of God. When we seek to know, love, and foll ow Christ, these four traits: compassion, vulnerability, courage, and grace become vital aspects of our spiritual life that propel us beyond the esoteric to the deeply existential. To fully experience the gift of wonder means acknowledging the brokenness that surrounds us without surrendering to it. We must believe that we can make a difference, wherever we are, whoever we are, first by allowing God’s love and grace to shine through the cracks in our lives and second, by being willing to carry the light of love into the cracked places of the world. Healing begins with truth-telling, grows with acceptance, and becomes lifelong in caring community. As you prepare for worship this week, invite God to speak to you of what a wonder you are, as you hold the light of Christ in your own individual self. Embrace this gift, then allow the Spirit to lead you into moments where you can share this precious treasure with another. May you find challenge and change in the cracks…
