Mayor's Message

Dear Friends,

It is with great sadness that we watch as the world around us continues to suffer from such seemingly preventable tragedy, as was demonstrated multiple times last week. The incidents of violence and rage are scattered across our country and while I can say confidently that our community has and will continue to build partnerships to hold off such tragedy from coming to our doorstep, we must acknowledge that these are not isolated incidents. They are not isolated by geography or community or by individual. As a small city, we have the responsibility to identify what role we carry. We must examine how we address systematic oppression and institutional racism, and how we correct the inequity that undeniably exists. We have a responsibility to acknowledge that we have work to do and that the evaluation of our efforts cannot simply be measured by a lack of violent incidents in our community. It must be measured by the partnerships we continue to build and the mutual and respectful dialogue we share. Our ultimate success will be realized when every one of our community members can feel safe.

I want to thank our Kingston Police Department, in particular Chief Egidio Tinti, who has demonstrated remarkable leadership. In addition, I want to express my gratitude to the members of our local faith community and residents who have come forward to express their shared commitment to building these relationships and continuing this open dialogue. It is through these joint efforts that I believe our community is on the right path.

-Steve

Free and Low Cost Recreation

Did you know that the Kingston Parks and Recreation Department  offers more than just Summer Parks programming for children during the summer? So much more!

How about a Friday evening kayak session led by Mayor Steve Noble?
Hu rry  fast- there are limited dates and we're nearly full!

We also have low cost kayak tours on Saturday mornings, led by  KC Keegan-Twombly, our new Environmental Educator. Special discounts for City of Kingston residents, youth, and those bringing their own equipment.

Want to enjoy a little nature in the city? Think about participating in our weekly "Naturalist's Passport" program. This free program is great for families and features interactive, outdoor nature activities.

We also have excellent adult nature walks that include transportation to various walking locations throughout the Mid-Hudson Valley, adult sports, and much more!

Summer Fun!
The 48th Annual Children's Day Parade was a huge success, with hundreds of children marching with over 40 floats and units. The storm only made the evening even more fun, with dozens of children (and adults too!) showing off their cool dancing moves in the rain.

Congratulations to the City of Kingston Parks and Recreation Department for organizing another great event!

Community Conversations

Mayor Noble and local community members, business owners and journalists came together to talk about how the City can build stronger relationships with the Spanish-speaking community. A number of great ideas and plans came out of this meeting, such as increasing access to employment and volunteer opportunities within the City, identifying internship opportunities and other strategies to improve translation services at City Hall, addressing safety concerns, and overall improved communication.

Mayor Noble had the honor of visiting the Caring Hands Soup Kitchen and shared a wonderful meal with Reverend Darlene Kelley and Teryl Mickens. Following the lunch, the group took a walk around the neighborhood to discuss future community projects and opportunities to collaborate.
