For many years, I observed Older Adults Sunday as suggested by the Presbyterian Planning Calendar on the first Sunday of May. Close to the start of the service, every person at worship was asked to write their age in a piece of paper and a designated person would add all those up and divide by the number of worshipers to come up with the average age for that service. Since Sunday School was held during the earlier service, that service’s average age was always lower than the later service, preferred by many of our seniors.
Eventually, people anticipated the results of this little ritual and tried to look for trends. From a statistical perspective, it was a pretty meaningless exercise. But people remembered the numbers from year to year, celebrating the years when we seemed to be getting younger (having new borns totally threw off any attempts at significant comparisons) and showing some anxiety when the number went up. Of course, we all knew that everyone present was older that year than the year before. Eventually we got around to accepting the fact that aging is part of life and that every day, every year, every hour is to be treasured for the gifts, challenges, lessons, and opportunities that it brings.
It’s important to remember that the main reason we are abiding by all the restrictions of these 7 weeks is so that life may not be unnecessarily shortened to those most vulnerable. Meanwhile, let us find ways to make these days meaningful and grace-filled, praying with the psalmist: “So teach us to count our days that we may gain a wise heart” (Ps. 90:12).
Peace ,
Pastor Osy

Those who serve on the Board of Deacons are ever grateful for our congregation’s continued monetary support so they may fill a need where there is one.
Thank you for your most generous contributions in April. Over $1000 was collected to help those in need. The Deacons have been very active in the last few weeks trying to meet the needs of the congregation as well as the community. Their ability to help others is dependent upon the amount of funds they have available.
We appreciate all our Deacons (current and past) and are very proud of the work and service they do for many.

Last week, we read about the need that exists at St. Gregory's Pantry. In an effort to make helping from home an option, several of our church members have volunteered to pick up items people are willing to donate and deliver them to the pantry.
Simply call or email the church office if you would like to contribute items or make a donation to the pantry from your home. We will take your name and contact information and then follow up with a set time where you can safely place your donation outside your door for us to pickup and deliver directly to the pantry. Please double check expiration dates. Expired products cannot be given out.
Items that are especially needed at this time include: B
read, breakfast cereal, chunky soups, canned tuna, canned chicken, and canned fruit or single-serving fruit packs, peanut butter, jelly, and snacks.
Gift Cards (Stop & Shop, ShopRite, CVS, Walgreens, Target) are especially needed. These as well as other financial donations can be mailed to
St. Gregory’s Pantry
804 Bay Avenue, Point Pleasant Beach, NJ 08742
Kindly include your full name and address, as they send a written acknowledgement for all donations of $20.00 and over.

With 71 years as a member, Ginny Zimmerman is our longest church member.
Ginny is in Willow Springs Nursing Home in Brick without a phone and no visitors are allowed. We thought she would be pleasantly surprised to receive cards from her church family letting her know we are thinking and praying for her. You don't have to know Ginny personally to send a card. This simple act will be sure to brighten her day.
Cards can be mailed to

Calling Everyone Married At PPPC
|
|
When we celebrate anniversary Sunday in June, we are looking to make a collage of everyone who has been married at Point Pleasant Presbyterian Church and is still worshipping with us.
Please send us a digital picture from your wedding day at the church. If scanning is not an option, you can take a picture of your original picture with your phone. Pictures can be emailed to mail@pointpresbyterian.org. Call the office if you would like help sending a picture.
Please include your names and date of wedding. Pictures can be from anytime throughout the years. We want to even include pictures from those who are now widowed but still were married here at the church.

Sunday School - See You Online!
|
|
In keeping with the times, our remaining Sunday School Sessions through May 17 will take place via Zoom before the regular church service begins. Families received their Zoom invitations this week via email and will receive the usual followup materials from "God Times" and "Parent Cue" that relate directly to the Sunday School experience. These thoughtful, easily applied activities and questions encourage faith discussions at opportune times during the week.

Our life skill for May is
Determination - Deciding it's worth it to finish what you started. Drawing from New Testament accounts following the Resurrection of Jesus, we'll find out how God gives us what we need to keep going! In our Zoom sessions,
we'll
chat a bit about our theme, watch the Bible Story Videos, and experience some of the other media that the children normally encounter in the large group session of physical Sunday School. We're excited about this new opportunity to share God's Word in a different way.

We finished all of our alphabet letters! This week online, we learned the life cycle of a butterfly and saw Mrs. Leto’s caterpillars. We will be watching their metamorphosis! Ms. Kerry reviewed our letters and sign language. Ms. Jess pulled out her magic hat with animals in it. Ms. Dawn and Ms. Mandy focused on numbers 1 and 2 with handwriting, pennies, songs and more.
Speaking of #1, I would like to thank our #1 administrative professionals in honor of Administration Professionals Day and also our #1 teachers in honor of Teacher Appreciation Day next week! We are lucky to have such an awesome team!

While we are social distancing, we can still support the homeless families who are part of the Interfaith Hospitality Network program and staying at the Day Center at 407 Lexington Ave., Toms River (just past St. Joseph R.C. Church on Hooper Ave., going south).
For the week of May 17-24, we don’t need to supply volunteers for dinner nor for overnights now due to the virus. Our mission is to bring cooked dinners/dessert for each night and shop for miscellaneous needs that the families might have (i.e. diapers, formula, juice, fruit, etc).
If you will volunteer to take one evening meal, please call Bette Hughes (732-581-7729) or Barbara Reusch (732-349-2792) to let us know which night and your menu. Monday and Tuesday nights’ meals are scheduled, so any other of the nights beginning on Sunday, May 17th, would be great! Thank you for your invaluable help in this important ministry in Ocean County.

This first Sunday in May, you will find the blue communion envelope in your box set for our "Emergency Repair Fund." Donations to this fund go into a separate interest-bearing savings account. The fund was established in 2012 and unlike the Emergency and Endowment Fund, the account can be accessed by Session when an emergency or repair arises that can't be paid by our annual budget. Our last use of the fund was for the emergency repair of the office air conditioner unit. It is money maintained in a separate account that can be accessed by Session immediately to handle an unexpected problem, etc. Please consider making a contribution to this important fund. When making an on-line donation, you will see the option for this fund. As always, thank you for your faithful support.
