Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA)
Awards CARES Act Payments to Students

Checks Processed Quickly to Get Aid Into Their Hands

Santa Fe, NM - April 28, 2020

The Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA) has been granted funding through the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act which provides emergency assistance to students, among others. One section of the CARES Act established the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund and sent money to schools to use for emergency financial aid grants to students for expenses related to the disruption of campus operations due to the pandemic. The Institute of American Indian Arts determined that the emergency funds will be distributed to all undergraduate, degree-seeking students based upon current enrollment.

A team of IAIA staff helped allocate the funding of $171,260 that was received for qualified students. IAIA based the amounts on enrollment and determined that:

$700 is to be distributed to full-time students (12-18 credits)
$525 is to be distributed to ¾ time enrollment (9 credits)
$350 is to be distributed to ½ time (6 credits)
$175 is to be distributed to less than half-time students (3 credits)

An email was sent to each student who qualifies for the payment, asking for their acknowledgement that they will be using the funds for housing, food, and childcare .

The CARES Act does not allow  international students, undocumented students, or students enrolled in distance-only degree programs to receive funds. We have made other emergency funds available to these students and will continue with the standing emergency aid program.

The CARES Act checks for IAIA Students

Th e team that put forth tremendous effort to get the funding out to students quickly -- IAIA received the money on Monday and the checks were ready for disbursement on Friday -- includes:  Nona Naranjo  (Santa Clara Pueblo), Student Accounts Specialist;  Scott, Whitaker , Financial Aid Director;  Dr. Bill Sayre , IR Director;  Anita Gavin , IR Associate Director;  Nena Martinez Anaya,  Chief Admissions & Student Success Officer;  and Aimee Balthazar, Controller.

IAIA President Dr. Robert Martin (Cherokee) commented, "The coronavirus pandemic has been disruptive for our students. Native populations are particularly vulnerable, but they are also resilient. In supporting our students during this challenging and stressful period, they can be successful. Congress's swift action to enact this legislation and earmarking these funds for our students, is an illustration of effective leadership in mitigating, in part, the effects of this pandemic crisis."
