Principal's Message

Fall weather is finally here. This is the time of year when students should wear layers of clothes to school since it tends to be cool in the mornings and warms up in the afternoon. Please be sure your kids leave the house in clothes that best suit the weather. Please also remember that students can enter the building at 8:45 am and the tardy bell rings at 9:00 am. Be sure to sign your students in at the front office when they are late and please do not use the bus lane for dropping students off.

Parents, I want to thank you for all you do to support your kid's growth. We have been making significant achievement gains in this district and we realize it could not be done without growing the whole child. Our partnership with you makes their growth possible. The newsletter this month includes ways you can continue to support your child both here at Glendening and at home.

Thanks for checking out our newsletter and remember you can follow us on twitter @glendeningelem and check out our website at  gocruisers.org/glendeningelementary_home.aspx

It's great to be a Cruiser!

Peace Day

We celebrated the International  Day  of  Peace on Thursday September 21st. The theme this year was TOGETHER FOR PEACE: RESPECT, SAFETY, and DIGNITY for ALL.  The focus was on the plight of refugees around the world forced to leave their homes due to war, persecution, or natural disaster.  This takes on particularly personal implications with so many Texans and Floridians who fled their homes due to Harvey and Irma.

During the celebration each student placed a pinwheel out in the front lawn, r efugee and former OSU basketball player Andy Ahijevych shared his story with us, and Mrs. Stauffer-Miller released a dove.

A special thank you to Mrs. Stauffer-Miller for all of the planning and hard work she put into making this day of peace special for all of us!
Kids Read Now

This past summer a number of 3rd through kindergarten students participated in the Kids Read Now program. It is importance for students to read over the summer to prevent the "summer slide". The summer slide is the tendency for students to lose some of the achievement gains they made during the previous school year.

Glendening's top readers are shown here with their prizes. Way to go summer readers!

PTO Fall Fundraiser

Thursday, September 28th the PTO had their fall fundraiser kickoff assembly. Be sure to check your student's book bag for the catalog of items that can be purchased. The fundraiser ends on October 13th so we only have a couple of weeks to get the orders in! Fifty percent of the proceeds go directly to the PTO who has a number of fun and educational activities planned.

Thank you to our PTO President Stephanie Powers and the rest of the PTO team for all you do!

Readers 2 Leaders

Parents to do you want to help your child become a better reader? We have a book club at Glendening this school year that will supply leveled books to your students. Parents, if you are interested in enrolling your child in the Readers 2 Leaders Book Club complete and submit the form linked below to your child's teacher. The goal of this book club is to partner with parents to improve reading fluency. Students will take books home at their reading level and work with their parents on reading and comprehension. Books can be read over several days and turned back in with the Book Club Log for their next book. You can use the Reading Tips and Tricks listed in the chart below to help your student with reading comprehension.

Growth Mindset Quote

"We only get stronger when it's difficult."

Here at Glendening we feel it is important to have a growth mindset. We will share inspirational quotes to keep us focused on reaching higher levels of achievement.

What is a growth mindset? "In a growth mindset, people believe that their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work-brains and talent are just the starting point. This view creates a love of learning and a resilience that is essential for great accomplishment," Carol Dweck.
