A Letter from Kristen...
Ongoing Events

Finally, Fall is floating through the air. I love Fall. It gives me more of a reason to snuggle up with a good book by the fireplace. And the puppy.
Fortunately, this Fall is full incredible kids and teen authors visiting schools and doing bookstore events (and apparently some alliteration). we just hosted the original
Pete the Cat
creator,
ERIC LITWIN
who sang and danced his way through schools and our bookstore with
Groovy Joe
. What an amazing guy!
One lucky school is hosting
DAV PILKEY
-- the
Captain Underpants
guy.
KATHERINE APPLEGATE
, of
The One and Only Ivan
fame, has an equally moving and timely new book,
Wishtree
. She'll be in schools and visiting our bookstore this month.
MAC BARNETT
and
JON KLASSEN
will also be visiting schools and coming to the bookstore this month, too.
My boys are particularly excited about
CHRIS GRABENSTEIN
's, author of
Escape from Mr. Lemoncello's Library
. Grabenstein has the third book in this series coming out and will be visiting schools and hosting "
Escape from Mr. Lemoncello's Bookstore
" at a very special store event. See below for details! You don't want to miss this! To up the ante, the movie of the first book premieres on
Nickelodeon
on Monday, October 9.
And of course, it's Halloween month! Has your student submitted their entry to our 2017 Scary Story Contest? See below for details.
Please be in touch if there's anything I can do for you!
Thanks for reading and being a Tattered Cover customer,
Kristen
PS: Don't forget to enter to win this month's Advanced Reading Copy giveaway! Katherine Applegate's

Meet Heather!
Director of Marketing & Events
|
Hello from the Marketing Department! As you can probably imagine, I love books, and working in a bookstore has been an amazing career. One of the best things about my job is all of the wonderful authors and celebrities I've been lucky enough to meet.
I've worked here for 28 years this October. I schedule our author events and work with a great team to let the world know about the Tattered Cover and all the cool stuff we have to offer.
When I was around 8 years old, my older sister gave me her copy of
A Wrinkle in Time
by Madeline L'Engle. I read it once, then again, and have never looked back. I read mostly science fiction and fantasy, but I love literary speculative fiction, humor, some historical fiction, and cookbooks.
When I'm not at the bookstore, I'm watching anything with a Marvel hero, listening to classic 80s albums, golfing or hiking, walking in the park with my dog, experimenting with a new recipe, and enjoying life with my husband and teenage son.

On shelves now...
by Katherine Applegate
"Narrated by an ancient oak tree named Red who watches over the neighborhood and extends his branches every year for people to hang wishes on them. When a new family moves into the neighborhood, not everyone is welcoming. Samar befriends a local boy under the tree and together with hope -- and unknowingly, Red, they seek to make things okay for Samar and her family.
Wishtree
is the story of kindness and hope. A cast of animal characters bring this story to life. A timely, important and very accessible book. A small book with a big heart. Perfect for One Book, One School programs and book clubs." --
Kristen Gilligan, co-owner

On shelves now...
by Sarah J. Maas
"
Tower of Dawn
offers up more of the character development and world building that have made Maas a goddess to me in her own right. And as she has always done-that piece of her writing that has always left me wanting and needing more of her stories-she took me inside these characters minds, showed me how they were broken, then let me watch them find those broken pieces of themselves, and fit them together in new ways. I have grown to love these characters for their flaws, and through watching them struggle to find happiness along all of the jagged edges of themselves. It's some of the most real and honest character realization that I have ever had the pleasure of reading. The better part of roughly 670 pages passed in a single day.
Tower of Dawn
was all consuming and full of plot twists and revelations that have completely unraveled and remade my expectations for the story's conclusion. It sustained me with more of the mind-blowing world building & storytelling that have marked Maas as a blossoming master of the genre. I may have skipped meals. I can't recall, I only remember
Tower of Dawn

On shelves now...
by Kenneth Wright, Sarah Jane Wright (Illustrator)
"Our nine month old, Cordelia, really loves
Lola Dutch is a Little Bit Much
. It's about a little girl who really loves life, but tends to go a bit overboard with her desires. Her guardian, Bear, does his best to keep Lola in line with a tender hand. He watches as she cooks to extravagance, borrows hundreds of library books, and seemingly paints the world. She learns, however, that sometimes simple things matter most, especially her love for Bear. The illustrations and art in this book are so colorful and fun. Lately, this is the book that Cordi reaches for first." --
Pete Schulte, Union Station store manager

On shelves now...
By Aaron Reynolds, Peter Brown (Illustrator)
"Jasper the Bunny is back with another nighttime mystery. Peter Brown's stylized black and white (and glowing green) illustrations are a perfectly creepy match to Aaron Reynolds hilarious tale of a weird pair of underwear that just won't go away ... I absolutely LOVE reading Jasper's first adventure --
Creepy Carrots
-- with my niece and nephew. Can't wait to share this one, too!" --
Katie Rothery, general manager

ABOUT THE BOOK
Wishtree
by Katherine Applegate (on shelves now)
Trees can't tell jokes, but they can certainly tell stories. . . .
Red is an oak tree who is many rings old. Red is the neighborhood "wishtree"--people write their wishes on pieces of cloth and tie them to Red's branches. Along with her crow friend Bongo and other animals who seek refuge in Red's hollows, this "wishtree" watches over the neighborhood.
You might say Red has seen it all. Until a new family moves in. Not everyone is welcoming, and Red's experiences as a wishtree are more important than ever. Funny, deep, warm, and nuanced,
Wishtree
is Newbery Medalist and
New York Times
-bestselling author Katherine Applegate at her very best--writing from the heart, and from a completely unexpected point of view.
