October Demo Night
Jeff Duerksen
Monday, October 16
Join us for refreshments, socializing, and a demo by artist Jeff Duerksen. There will also be time at the end to share, so bring something you've been working on or information about your upcoming event.
Bio
While he's found that every culture with paper and cutting implements has its own paper cut art, the most common name Jeff Duerksen hears for his style of artwork is Sherenshnitte, which is German for "scissor cuts".
Detailed, technical, and whimsically macabre, Jeff's style first began to take shape in the late 80s and early 90s, the period he refers to as his green Mohawk/black eyeliner days. He began cutting stencils out of cardstock, three at a time, to paint T-shirts for himself and his friends. Years later, a visit to an arts festival, where he saw intricate laser cut silhouettes, inspired him to try adding a piece of black paper between the layers of card stock. His goal was to achieve the same level of intricacy cutting by hand. After much practice and technical tweaking, he is almost there and getting closer with every design.
If you'd like to give it a try, please bring the following supplies.
For scissor cuts: pencil and eraser, scissors (the smaller and sharper the better), silhouette paper (available at several online stores), picture reference or shape to trace.
For knife cuts: #11 exacto knife and blades, self-healing cutting mat, card stock paper, dark colored tissue paper, stapler and staples, picture reference or shape to trace.
