CSI Off-Campus Center Names |
At the College of Southern Idaho, we know that "one size does not fit all" when it comes to delivering college courses, short term training, and community education and enrichment classes. The four CSI off-campus centers, located in Burley, Gooding, Hailey, and Jerome, provide the primary means of educational outreach for students who reside in the outlying communities that comprise our eight-county service area in South-Central Idaho. In an effort to lessen confusion about where these centers are located or what they are called, please refer to them by their official titles, which are:
CSI Jerome Center
CSI Gooding Center
CSI Blaine County Center
CSI Mini-Cassia Center
CSI off-campus education centers truly offer a "one stop" education support experience for students, regardless of life experience or educational background. Students at the off-campus education centers can access support for advising and registration, financial aid, academic records, bookstore services, and support services. CSI's off-campus centers offer a wide array of coursework delivered through traditional face-to-face instruction, over CSI's microwave system, or via the Internet. We invite you to stop by at any of our off-campus education centers and find out what we can do to expand your personal and professional horizons.

The CSI Employee Wellbeing Program sponsors a newsletter from the Wellness Council of America (WELCOA) called Well Balanced that runs from August through May. This month's issue features an article called Coping with Caregiving, among other great news, that is a great lead to a series slated for this fall on campus. Following on the heels of our financial presentation from our VALIC rep Ternel Martinez on Long-Term Care, we will focus on caregiving and end-of-life issues for our own knowledge and to be able to help a parent or other loved one.
Watch for details about our Coping with Caregiving series with Shawna Wasko from the Office on Aging to come and find a copy of the August Well Balanced newsletter in your department to share today.

The Wellbeing Program and Sustainability Council are pleased to share with you a year of learning about and the means to reduce our individual and corporate carbon footprints. Each month we will focus on sustainable practices that enhance our life and improve our environment. What we learn and practice together we can share with our families and in our community. Please join us for a fun year of education, resources, challenges and tools.
What is a carbon footprint?
Footprints offer clues about where we came from and where we're headed. Their impressions tell us something about the animals that leave them. But while actual footprints offer details on size, weight and speed, carbon footprints measure how much carbon dioxide (CO2) we produce just by going about our daily lives. A drive to work, a flip
of a
light
switch and a flight out of town all rely on the combustion of fossil fuels like
oil
, coal and gas. When fossil fuels burn, they emit greenhouse gases like CO2 that contribute to
global warming
. Ninety-eight percent of atmospheric CO2 comes from the combustion of fossil fuels [source:
Energy Information Administration
].
How can I improve my own carbon footprint?
We can start by choosing to minimize the things and behaviors in our lives that impact the impression we leave.
Marie Kondo
would call it "organizing your world and designing your life to spark joy." Simplicity is key. Taking ACTION to challenge our transportation, housing and shopping habits will definitely be involved. Reducing THINGS in our homes will allow us unbelievable freedom from stuff!

Hello Everyone! I would like you to personally invite you to Stop the Bleed Training being held on main campus during in-service week. This is a great quick class that will help prepare you for utilization of our Stop the Bleed Kits. In the tumultuous times we live in, it is a great idea to be prepared for the worst and to continue to hope for the best. I hope that none of you ever need to utilize this training. However, I want you to be prepared and comfortable should the unthinkable events occur. I really do believe in the mission of Stop the Bleed, and I hope you find time in your schedule to attend one of our sessions. Attached is a flyer for the course here, and information sheet with the need and mission of Stop the Bleed. Also, I have attached calendar invites to each one of the trainings. Please let me know if you have any questions.

The CSI Planetarium is offering two weekly shows in Spanish!
- Dinosauios al Atardecer: los origenes del vuelo
- Showing Tuesdays at 8 p.m.
- Lucy and her father love all things about flight and Lucy also loves dinosaurs. Through a twist of fate, Lucy and her father find themselves far back in time, the time of the dinosaurs. Together, as they race through time they discover how flight arose in dinosaurs.
- Beyond The Sun: En busca de una nueva Tierra
- Showing Saturdays at 4:30 p.m.
- Come learn about exoplanets, planets that orbit other stars. Celeste is a curious young girl. She is especially curious about planets, like Mercury, Venus, Mars, and Jupiter, but she does not know about exoplanets. Leave it to her new friend, Luna, to enlighten her and the audience to the existence of exoplanets.Discover for yourself how astronomers discover exoplanets, when in fact, they cannot be seen.
The presenters for these shows are fluent in Spanish and the Center is also working on securing the Spanish soundtracks for four more shows and possibly an additional two after that.

PUBLIC CHARTER SCHOOL COMMISSION ACCEPTS AG RECOMMENDATIONS
The Idaho Public Charter School Commission (PCSC) today voted unanimously to accept responsibility and adopt recommendations made by the Office the of Attorney General (OAG) to remedy violations of Idaho's Open Meeting Law that occurred during a PCSC executive session meeting held last April.
The OAG conducted an investigation as a result of complaints received after a PCSC executive session meeting was inadvertently recorded and mistakenly released in response to a public record request.
The OAG recommended the PCSC acknowledge publicly that the executive session violated the law and to schedule and undergo OAG administered training on the Open Meeting Law in public. That training occurred after the vote and lasted nearly two hours.
The PCSC also heard public testimony from nearly 20 charter school board members, administrators, parents, students and lobbyists. About two-thirds were critical, many saying the Commission's executive session discussions damaged trust that will be difficult to repair.
"This whole matter has been very difficult for everyone involved," stated PCSC Chairman Alan Reed. "As I said last week, mistakes were made and I hope this special meeting, the training and the opportunity folks had to speak their mind will help us all move forward to support and do what is best for our students and our charter schools."

Make Vaccinations a Priority; Update Your Family's Vaccine Records
Before Your Kids Head Back to School
SOUTH CENTRAL IDAHO - After a year full of measles, flu and pertussis (whooping cough), South Central Public Health District (SCPHD) is urging parents to make vaccinations a priority and fully protect their children's immune systems before sending them back to school this fall.
"Illness can spread quickly in schools because everyone is in such close quarters," said Logan Hudson, SCPHD Nurse Manager. "Immunizations and proper handwashing are the very best ways to make sure your kids don't catch this year's seasonal bugs."
In the 2018-2019 school year several local districts were forced to shut down schools because illness had affected too many teachers, too many students, or both. It's SCPHD's mission to help prevent those kind of outbreaks and keep our communities as healthy as possible. To do that, SCPHD needs the public's help to vaccinate and prevent illness.
"Vaccines don't just protect the client who receives them-they help stop the spread of an illness and protect that client's family, friends, and community," said Christi Dawson-Skuza, SCPHD Public Health Nurse. "The problem is when too many people opt-out. At that point there isn't much to stop viruses from spreading like wildfire across a community."
Children are required to have several immunizations before entering kindergarten and seventh grade. Most colleges and universities also require future students to receive immunizations before enrolling. To help keep Southern Idaho students safe, SCPHD will be at several local 7th grade registrations/open houses to offer immunizations. To find out if SCPHD will be at your school, or to learn more about the required vaccines, visit our website.
Follow the District on Twitter at @SCPHD and on Facebook. For more information about the South Central Health District please visit
