sargassum
By: Tim Malloy

Known as sargassum seaweed, the thick plant has overtaken beaches in South Florida in recent weeks and has lined numerous Caribbean island coastlines for even longer, according to a report from the University of Miami.

Florida Legislature Again

A fight over disposable straws could return to the state Legislature, even after Gov. Ron DeSantis earlier this year vetoed a bill that would have blocked local governments from banning plastic straws. A measure (SB 40) filed Friday by Sen. Kevin Rader, a Delray Beach Democrat, would take the opposite approach, by prohibiting the use of plastic straws and plastic "carryout" bags statewide.

Recent afternoon thunderstorms are revealing a big pest problem in Palm Beach County: invasive termites in live trees. The termites are weakening native trees causing them to snap during storms. Homes in South Florida are already being impacted by the aggressive and invasive Asian subterranean termite species, now so are trees.
