WELCOME BACK KNIGHTS!

On behalf of the teachers, support staff, and our leadership team, I welcome back all of our students on Monday, August 12th for what I know is going to be another successful school year. As you will see herein, our teachers have been preparing for the students' arrival on Monday. This past week was our annual back-to-school pre-planning week and this year we themed it around super heroes.

I want to thank all those families that turned out for our Meet the Teacher event. I also want to remind our families of two important meetings this week that impact both students and their teachers: SAC (Tuesday, 5-7 PM) and PTSA (Wednesday, 5-6 PM). We really depend upon community involvement in these two groups every school year. If you will have a student attending Lake Nona, please try to attend one or both of these meetings. One of the many reasons that we consistently remain an 'A' school in the eyes of the Florida Department of Education is because we have been blessed in the past to have caring, active SAC and PTSA organizations.

As for this issue, we have included some important back-to-school information. Please take care to note any dates and times as they may apply to your household. We have a number of special events and activities occurring throughout this month and into September.

I am looking forward to seeing everyone Monday morning for an on-time start to what promises to be a very successful year. And again, WELCOME BACK KNIGHTS!

With Knight Pride,

Stephanie R. Jackson, M. Ed.

Welcome Back to School!

The first day of school is Monday, August 12th, 2019. Please help students start the new school year  by coming to school in dress code and with a few school supplies to begin this week. Each teacher will introduce their expectations including supplies to the students.

Arrival to Campus
The first day of school is always very busy as all our students and parents are learning the best routes to take to get on and off campus. Please make sure you take time and discuss with your child how they are getting to and from LNMS each day. Be very specific when speaking about safety rules and remember students should not be on campus before 9 am (unless they are in the All Stars Before and After School Club).

Student Safety
Make sure students who are walking and biking, know the traffic rules, look both ways before crossing the street and only cross the street at a crosswalk. Also, students need to know that they should only we walking on sidewalks and not cutting into parking spaces or grassy areas. Bike riders need to be sure to follow bike rules and have an appropriate lock to lock up their bike.

Students who are car-riders need to remember that they should only be exiting from the right side of the car on to a paved sidewalk. Please do not allow your child to disembark your vehicle prior to reaching the drop off platform.

Our bus riders should also be included in this safety talk. Bus riders need to make sure they sit in a seat assigned to them, stay seated while the bus is in motion, and keep a low voice while talking on the bus. Also, be sure to have your student write down their bus # in a safe location they will know how to access.

Parents, since many of you will be driving students to school or headed to work during  school hours, please keep an eye out for our students and obey the traffic rules, particularly when it comes to traveling on the road with buses.

Knight SAC Meeting - August 13, 2019 - 5:00-7:00 PM - Media Center

The School Advisory Council (SAC) is a team of individuals from various segments of the community-parents, teachers, students, administrators, support staff, business/industry people, and other interested community members. The purpose of the SAC is to assist the principal in developing and evaluating the results of the School Improvement Plan (SIP) along with the annual school budget and to help increase student success.

The LNMS SAC agenda is always posted on our webpage. A very important item for this meeting is to elect a new chairperson for the 2019-2020 school year.

Teacher Super Hero Pre-Planning Week!
We are going to have a MARVELous year!

Teachers were busy this past week planning for their new school year by decorating classroom doors and bulletin boards, ordering materials for science labs, and helping new teachers on their team. There was some fun time also planned during the week. Check out these pictures!

PE Uniform and Optional Lock Rental Information

To purchase the school's PE uniform of $20.00 is made easy to you by having two options. In addition to paying cash you can go online and pay with a credit card and have your student pick up the uniform during class. The uniform consists of a top and bottom that is required for class and will be worn every day.

The two ways you can purchase your uniform is to send cash to school with your student to purchase during class or to go online at www.school.pay.com found on our school website and use your credit card. If you choose a credit card, the student will pick up the uniform during PE class. As soon as the payment is completed online and the daily print out of updated online payments is processed, we will then give your student their PE uniform. Please give up to 24 hours to be updated. The deadline for online purchasing is August 16th. After this, students may still purchase PE uniforms during PE class through their PE teachers.

Lock rental is to be paid in cash only during class and not through school pay as we sell out quickly. Locker rental is not required, but strongly encouraged. Locker rentals are $10.00. This fee covers the locker for the entire school year. Lock is already included in this fee.

We do not accept checks!

Encouraged tip: The purchasing of additional PE uniforms is a very good idea. Keeping one uniform at school while the other is being washed at home ensures your student is forever ready for class which is a significant part of their grade.

Monday's Motivational Moment!

SUPERHEROES DO EXIST

As you probably noticed above, this year our pre-planning week was geared around a superhero theme. This was not an accident. I am so very proud of the teachers and staff we have at Lake Nona Middle School. Besides the long, long hours they dedicate to their students, they try extremely hard to reach every kind of student. They strive to create opportunities not just for a few of our young Knights, but for all of them. And they have the ability to take a dollar and stretch it greatly to benefit their classrooms! (This is why I ask you to support our SAC and PTSA as those groups know this and they do what they can to help the teachers.) In my eyes, and through the eyes of many students, our educators are indeed real superheroes.

Please remember this. We are all where we are today because of teachers from our past. So in closing out this initial issue for the new school year, I want to say thank you to all of our parents and guardians for trusting us with your children. Starting this Monday, you will be leaving them in the hands of top professionals in their field. I can promise you that during their time at Lake Nona Middle School they will acquire a fine education and I encourage all of our students to take advantage of the many opportunities Lake Nona Middle School offers.
