Dear Sequoyah Community,

The murder of George Floyd at the hands of those who were there to serve and protect is unconscionable. Sequoyah stands in community and solidarity in the fight against systems of anti-black racism and oppression. We stand with those who suffer under these systems. All institutions, including our own, are impacted by these legacies and it is our obligation to work together to disrupt them. To our African American and African descent families, we see you and acknowledge the pain and trauma you may be suffering right now.

As a school community that celebrates human dignity, we cannot stand by and accept the status quo. We are committed to the ongoing work related to diversity, equity, inclusion and social justice with our students and faculty. This is expressed in our curriculum and in the way we work together to become change-makers and upstanders in our larger community.

We will provide the following spaces at both the K-8 and High School for students to process these events:

  • For the High School, we will have a Morning Meeting at 8:30AM tomorrow followed by a council at 1:45PM. Students are encouraged to seek support from their Advisor, our Dean of Students, Viviana Palacio, our Social & Emotional Learning Specialist, Anais Plasketes, or any other member of the faculty or staff.
  • For the K-8, teachers will provide spaces in the morning or closing meeting for students to share their thoughts and feelings related to these events.
  • For K-12 parents we will provide a space to process, as well as a separate space for families of African American and African descent students. Information on this will be forthcoming.

Sincerely,

Josh Brody, Head of School

Azizi Williams, Assistant Head of School

Marc Alongi, High School Director
