Roxbury Bands Hold Google Meet with Special Guest
Middle and high school band students in Roxbury had a special guest on Wednesday morning for a Google Meet which was truly a unique experience virtually for the entire band program.

Band students held a Google Meet with Staff Sergeant Michael Ducassoux of the United States Marine Corps, who is currently serving as a Recording Engineer with "The President's Own" United States Marine Band. SSgt Ducassoux's post is in the Marine Band Recording Lab, where his primary job is recording various Marine Band and Marine Chamber Orchestra concerts and sessions and providing sound reinforcement for performances. In addition, they are responsible for the recording studio and the preservation of the band's recorded archive collections.

"Ssgt Ducassoux spoke to us for about 45 minutes and covered topics including a brief history of The Marine Band, his role in the organization, his background, what kinds of opportunities are available in the music and recording industry at large, and how the performing arts are currently being affected and will be affected in the future by the current state of the world. In the end, we opened up the Google Meet to a Q&A session.  Ssgt Duccasoux talked to us about the recent virtual band project that he just finished working on with "The President's Own", which is the same type of project that we are working on with all of our bands," shared 7th grade Band Director Greg Boccuti.

A virtual band project is where each musician submits a video recording of themselves playing their part to a piece of music, played along to a click track through headphones. An audio engineer then takes all of those recordings, synchronizes them, mixes, edits, and masters them, and then puts all of the videos together to create a "virtual performance".  Here is the most recent release on their YouTube channel. All of the video and audio that you see and hear was done with smartphone cameras. Click here to read more on our website under "In the News".

Roxbury to reopen recycling center, but Saturdays only
The Township of Roxbury Recycling Center will reopen this weekend from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, May 16.  The center will be open on Saturdays only until further notice.

The purpose of this reopening is to allow residents to recycle items and materials not  collected through the weekly curbside collection. These items include electronics (computers, printers, TVs, laptops, monitors, desktop printers, desktop faxes only), clothing, motor oil, metal items, fluorescent light bulbs and larger pieces of brush.

Residents are encouraged continue to utilize curbside collection for grass, leaves, paper and cardboard as well as cans and bottles.  In order to maintain social distancing a limited number of cars will be allowed in the center at any one time. Residents are asked to be patient.  Additional staff will be onsite to direct traffic. Everyone accessing the center will be expected to place their materials in the respective container.  The center will consider opening both weekend days based on the demand.  The safety of both staff and the public is paramount; as such social distancing of at least 6 feet must be maintained.

Roxbury Makes Top 50 List of New Jersey Safe Cities
Police this week said they were investigating "a possible attempted theft" in Succasunna and urged residents to lock their cars and homes. But that doesn't mean the town is unsafe, according to a new report.

Roxbury is one of the top 50 municipalities in New Jersey when it comes to being safe from crime, according to SafeWise, a company that researched statewide statistics.  In its sixth annual "Safest Cities in New Jersey report, SafeWise rated Roxbury 38th statewide, one spot better than Denville but slightly less safe than Randolph, which landed at 31 on the list.

The company found River Vale - a Bergen County town with about 10,000 people and a median income of about $132,000 - to be the safest of the 244 municipalities it ranked. It said it calculated crime rates for municipalities that met a "population threshold" and included only those that submitted a crime report to the FBI in 2018.

According to SafeWise, Roxbury - with a population of 23,000 and a median income of $104,453, reported a 2019 violent crime rate of .2 per 1000 people and a 2019 property crime rate of 10.1.  It said 32 municipalities improved in rank year over year, "with Hopatcong making the biggest jump - 100 spots from 116 to 16." It said every town on the "safest" list "beat both the state (2.1) and national (3.7) crime rates and every city kept violent crime to less than one incident per 1,000." Virus Blows Plans for 'Beach Blast' in Roxbury
First COVID-19 forced the  cancellation of the Roxbury Memorial Day Parade. Now the disease has forced the cancellation of another popular outdoor event in town: The  Horseshoe Lake Beach Blast.

Roxbury Mayor Bob DeFillippo made the announcement at Tuesday's meeting of the Roxbury Mayor and Council, a Zoom remote session that saw the mayor also report that 12 deaths in the township are being attributed to the virus.  "As previously announced, we have canceled the Memorial Day parade," DeFillippo said. "And today, we must now announce that our community Beach Blast has been canceled. Also, regrettably, we are not planning to open The Horseshoe Lake Beach on Memorial Day."

The mayor said township officials are "tentatively" hoping to open the beach on June 27. That decision will depend on guidance from the state, DeFillippo said.  "We will continue to monitor our situation, and we will keep the community posted," he said. "A reminder, fishing in the lake is allowed."

All township Recreation Department events are also canceled until further notice. Click here to read more updates from TAPinto Roxbury.

Student art contest offered in 7th Congressional District
The 2020 Congressional Art Competition for high school students in New Jersey's 7th Congressional District is under way.  The art competition is an opportunity to recognize and encourage artistic talent in the nation. It is open to all high school students in the 7th District and will be judged by a panel of leaders within the local art community, Rep. Tom Malinowski, D-7, said.

The overall winner of the district competition will be displayed for one year in the U.S. Capitol as well as on Rep. Malinowski's website and social media pages.  The exhibit in Washington, D.C., will also include artwork from other contest winners nation-wide.

Township of Roxbury partners with American Red Cross to host community blood drive - June 25
Township of Roxbury will host a community blood drive with the American Red Cross on Thursday, June 25, 2020 from 3:30 p.m.-8:30 p.m. at the Township of Roxbury Senior Center located at 72 Eyland Avenue in Succasunna, NJ.

To Schedule an Appointment:
Individuals can schedule an appointment to give blood with the American Red Cross by visiting RedCrossBlood.org using the Red Cross Blood Donor App, calling 1-800-RED CROSS or activating the Blood Scheduling Skill for Amazon Alexa.

Blood donation is essential: As the coronavirus pandemic has grown, the Red Cross has experienced an increase in blood drive cancellations across the country due to concerns about congregating at workplaces, college campuses and schools.  Blood donation is essential for hospitals to be able to take care of those who need it. This blood shortage could impact patients who need surgery, victims of car accidents and other emergencies, or patients suffering from cancer. The demand for blood products (blood, platelets and plasma) is constant, even when the world isn't in the midst of a global pandemic.

"We are excited to be hosting a blood drive here in town. If anyone is wondering what they can do to help during this pandemic, donating blood is a great way to give back." said Kellie Ann Keyes, Blood Drive Coordinator.

Additional questions can be directed to Kellie Ann Keyes at 973-448-2053. Click here to read more from Hopatcong Lake Regional News.

The Roxbury Area Chamber of Commerce 14th annual Taste of Roxbury culinary event that was due to take place from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Monday, May 18, 2020 at the Roxbury High School has been postponed.  Please check back here. They are hoping to reschedule this event in the fall of 2020.

Lake Hopatcong Veterans Cruise for 2020 - June 27
The date has been set as Saturday, June 27th for the 5th Annual Veterans Cruise on Lake Hopatcong, and that means the scramble for seats has already started for this special tribute to our veterans - America's heroes.  Each year Lake Hopatcong Cruises honors our veterans from the lake's four border towns - Hopatcong, Jefferson, Mount Arlington, and Roxbury - with a two-hour complimentary cruise around the lake, and a special tribute is paid to the veterans throughout the cruise as residents line the bridges and docks with waving flags in honor of the service that they have provided to our country.  This event is extremely popular with the Veterans and will fill quickly, so please contact your appropriate town representative to have your name added to the list as soon as possible. Last year in Hopatcong the first-come-first-served list filled within days and overflowed into a long waiting list. Click here to read more from Hopatcong Lake Regional News.

Lake Hopatong Block Party will now be held on Oct. 10
The annual Lake Hopatcong Block Party has been moved to Saturday, Oct. 10.   "As was announced earlier, in following the CDC directive on public gatherings, we unfortunately cannot hold the Lake Hopatcong Block Party on May 9," a statement from Lee Moreau of the Lake Hopatcong Foundation states.

"We are now moving forward on rescheduling the Lake Hopatcong Block Party to Saturday, October 10, the day before the LHF Lake Loop, also at Hopatcong State Park," he said.

"For those who have already responded requesting a refund, those checks will be issued April 13 and put into the mail.   Thank you for being a part of the Lake Hopatcong Block Party, and please stay safe and healthy," he said. Click here to read this coverage from the Roxbury Register.
