Help in hurricane, flood and earthquake recovery
Our thoughts and prayers go out to the millions of people along the gulf coast and in the Caribbean who have been severely impacted by Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma. We have never had two such massive storms hit the mainland so close together and a third major storm, Hurricane Jose, appears to be following behind Irma. The National Hurricane Center
http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/ provides up to the minute reports on the status of these storms
We appreciate that many readers of the ADSA Dair-e-news are from outside of the U.S. While Hurricanes Harvey and Irma have dominated news coverage in the West, we realize that Nepal, India, and Bangladesh are experiencing the worst flooding in decades this monsoon season. Over 1,200 people have lost their lives so far, with hundreds of thousands more displaced. Almost 2,000 relief camps have been established for flood refugees in these countries.
(MORE) In addition, Mexico was hit by the largest earthquake in over a decade on Friday leaving at least 32 dead and hundreds injured, after wreaking destruction on the country's impoverished south and triggering tsunami alerts around the region.
Media outlets provide graphic portrayals of the devastation that is and has occurred. They very effectively show the immediate needs that must be addressed, but we know that recovery efforts will be ongoing for years after the cameras have left. In addition to thoughts and prayers we encourage contributions to aid in recovery efforts through your favorite charity, especially when there are opportunities to have your gift matched. If you are looking for a place to donate for domestic relief you can find the American Red Cross on-line site at https://www.redcross.org/donate/donation. In partnership with the global Red Cross Red Crescent network, the American Red Cross delivers on-the-ground support in places like Colombia, El Salvador, Honduras, Haiti, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Myanmar, Mexico, Nepal, the Philippines and Vietnam.

NIFA announces $945,000 in funding to recruit, educate workforce
WASHINGTON, D.C. Sept. 7, 2017 - The U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) today announced $945,400 in available funding to help foster the next generation of multicultural scholars in agricultural sciences. Funding is made through NIFA's Higher Education Multicultural Scholars Program (MSP).
"The Multicultural Scholars Program seeks to help young people reach their potential in the agricultural sciences," said NIFA Director Sonny Ramaswamy. "It is important to develop the most diverse talent pool possible and show these students the abundant opportunities in the agricultural sector."
The
Higher Education Multicultural Scholars Program (MSP) helps colleges and universities recruit and retain multicultural scholars who may pursue degrees in food and agricultural sciences disciplines or the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree. Projects may involve scholarships to support recruiting, engaging, retaining, mentoring, and training of committed, eligible multicultural scholars. (MORE)

FDA answers questions on crop use from flooded fields
The Food & Drug Administration's Center for Veterinary Medicine (CVM), which regulates animal feed, issued an update Sept. 8 with questions and answers related to using crops harvested from flooded fields.
Can I use the crops that have been harvested from fields flooded by a hurricane for animal feed?
In general, crops harvested from flooded fields are not considered acceptable for use in animal feed.
Why are crops from flooded fields generally unacceptable?
It is reasonably likely that flood water contain sewage, pathogenic organisms, pesticides, chemical wastes, or other toxic substances. Even more serious is the mold growth which may occur in wet foods. Certain molds produce mycotoxins which are toxic or carcinogenic to certain animals including humans, and if present in animal feed, can result in the presence of unsafe residues in foods produced from the animal.

Keeping cows cool with less water, energy
Innovative cooling technologies tested on dairy cows at the University of California-Davis (UC-Davis) are addressing the long-standing challenge of keeping dairy cows cool in heat-stressed areas like California and other regions.
Standard livestock cooling methods, such as using fans and sprinkling cows with water, require significant amounts of electricity and water. The new technologies being tested at UC-Davis by the department of animal science and the Western Cooling Efficiency Center are designed to reduce water use by as much as 86% and electricity by as much as 38% versus conventional methods.
In addition to disturbing the cow, heat stress is a major cause of diminished milk production in dairy cows, with annual losses directly related to heat stress exceeding $800 million.
