News about California Community Colleges building makerspaces with support from the CCC Maker CCCCO grant under the Doing What Matters for Jobs and the Economy framework. 

Project Updates November 2017
Recent CCC Maker initiative activities included:
  • "Tap the TAP" Thursdays at noon webinar series kicked off in November to provide ongoing coaching and resources from the Technical Assistance Provider (TAP), service providers, college maker team members and advisory committee members
  • The Workplace online Community of Practice was established for internal communication among college team members so they can learn from each other
  • Colleges finalized implementation budgets and work plans for year one of implemention
  • Colleges submitted quarterly fiscal and narrative reports in October documenting student impact through community, curriculum, internships and makerspaces
Impact of College Makerspaces in First Quarter

CCC Maker colleges submitted their quarterly reports in October documenting the initial impact of CCC Maker funded makerspaces:
  • 2504 students accessed makerspaces
  • 105 student activities were hosted totaling 7,828 hours of making
  • 92 employers were recruited and provided 426 hours of support, advice and instruction
  • 100+ students have been recruited or are being trained for work-based learning
  • 49 professional development activities were conducted focused on entrepreneurial and maker curriculum
Colleges Share Implementation Stories on CCC Maker Blog

The City College of San Francisco MakerSPHERE team emphasized curriculum development in the first quarter and two new Maker courses are included in the 2018-19 course catalog -- MAKR 100: Introduction to History, Culture and Practices of Making and MAKR 400: Maker Capstone which will provide a culminating prototyping project based course for a developing Certificate in Maker Studies.

Sacramento City College plans to open its makerspace in January 2018 for the spring semester. Equipment and tools are arriving weekly, students have started work and district facilities staff has begun upgrading the classrooms with new paint, electrical upgrades, new flooring and plumbing.

Heather Lincoln, a Sierra College student in her final semester, and a Sierra Makerspace student participant, conducted a three-hour Design Thinking workshop for 20 Girl Scouts ranging in age from 10-13 at Hacker Lab powered by Sierra College on November 12, 2017. Sierra College Makerspaces also sponsored a "Spooktacular Family Maker Night" for students, faculty and the community with projects such as making masks, sewing treat bags, crafting gourd birdhouses and soldering LED flashlights.

Glendale Community College students and faculty have been expanding their ecosystem by participating in community events including the San Diego Maker Faire, Glendale Tech Week and Latinas in STEM workshop.

Students in a Moorpark College graphics class designed logos for the new campus makerspace. The logos were put on display at the Campus Center and students who voted for their favorites were entered into a drawing for prizes. Additionally, more than 350 students helped the college launch its pop-up Makerspace by designing projects that marked the college's 50th anniversary.

College of the Canyons (COC) produced a video about the college makerspace. The College of the Canyons MakerSpace is "designed and dedicated to spark creativity, spur collaboration and fuel innovation." The college also sponsored an eco-zomBEE robot challenge on November 2 where participants used free LEGO Robot kits provided at the COC Valencia MakerSpace to compete against other eco-zomBEEs in collecting pollen and nectar on a challenging Halloween themed Native Garden course.

At Folsom Lake College, Dominic Green (Chemistry) laser cut and etched General Chemistry extra credit coins, the Making Social Change class created applique quilt squares for a collective class quilt and a student laser cut a new projection mask featuring Nova, the college mascot, for a LED Halloween ghost projection.
