INS-Authored Paper Explores the Key Trends in Brain Science Shaping Neuroethics
Members of the INS Emerging Issues Task Force wrote an article titled ‘ Neuroethics at 15: The Current and Future Environment for Neuroethics.’ In the article, published in AJOB Neuroscience, the authors explore the challenges and implications that current and future advances in neuroscience and neurotechnology will pose for the field of neuroethics.
The authors predict neuroethics will be shaped most significantly over the next 15 years by:

  • Rapid and continuous increase in knowledge and technical capability
  • The expanding global landscape for large-scale neuroscience research, and
  • Increases in commercial, military, and government applications of neurotechnologies

In this landscape of transformation, the authors encourage the global neuroethics community to continue to embrace and foster collaboration, inclusiveness, professionalism, academic opportunities, and to expand its conceptual toolbox by incorporating analytic instruments and empirical approaches from other fields.

Contributors to the paper included co-corresponding authors Philipp Kellmeyer and Jennifer Chandler; their fellow INS Emerging Issues Task Force members Laura Cabrera, Adrian Carter, and Karola Kreitmair; coauthor Judy Illes, an INS Past President; and Hank Greely, INS President, who the authors thanked for providing valuable input and comments.

The FENS Forum of Neuroscience is Europe’s largest international neuroscience meeting. The 2020 event's scientific program will cover neuroscience from basic to translational research and feature a wide range of themes, including ethical issues and neuroethics. You can download print and digital assets from the  promotional toolkit  to spread the word about this event. The INS is a member of the Federation of European Neuroscience Societies (FENS).
Congratulations to everyone who submitted an abstract or essay to the 2019 INS Annual Meeting. We received a record number of submissions of consistently high quality. Your participation and hard work keeps the neuroethics community strong!

Notices of recognition — including selection of oral presentations, travel stipends, and contest winners — will be determined and announced in the coming weeks. Please watch for notification emails. Thank you for your patience awaiting these results from the hard-working members of the Program and Student/Postdoc Committees of the INS.
