This position offers an opportunity for an engaging and substantive ministry. St. Brendan's seeks someone who embraces diversity of thought and opinions to lead them forward. Last Sunday at 9:00 some of us were at the Island Nursing Home for the service we hold for residents every six weeks.
We were 21 in attendance which included 14 residents from the Nursing Home. Stewart Pierson offered a reflection after the gospel reading. Alan Flowers accompanied the hymns.
Our next service will be Sunday September 15th. Mark your calendars now and plan to come and help bring a Sunday service to the nursing home residents.

ALFRED'S CHRISTMAS FUND
There is a festive box near the Church entrance which awaits your generosity. Alfred Clough died when he was just 21 years old. His favorite holiday was Christmas, and he enjoyed dressing up and playing Santa for his family. As a tribute to him and his giving spirit Alfred's Christmas Fund was established.
Through financial and in-kind donations the Fund provides Christmas gifts for some several hundred island children who would otherwise not have a Christmas. The effort is led by Bobbi Billings of Deer Isle. By filling our box with gifts, we can reduce the workload of Bobbi and her volunteers, while enjoying the good feeling that comes from worthwhile giving. Gift suggestions include: Barbie dolls, Large Lego sets, Sleds, Remote control cars, trucks & planes, Jackets, Kids' boots, and Snow pants. (A longer list is appended to the box.)

Stewardship Campaign for 2020
Our Stewardship Campaign is under way and several pledges have already been received. Stewardship letters will still be available for pick up this Sunday. We will mail any remaining letters this Monday. The Ingathering will be Sunday, August 25th. We hope you will be with us then as we bring the pledges up to the altar with the offering. The Stewardship Committee will be holding a special brunch to celebrate following the service.

St. Brendan Women's Bishopswood Retreat 2019
Sign-up for St. Brendan's Women's Retreat at Camp Bishopswood is open.
Dates: Sept. 3 - 6: early afternoon on Tuesday until after breakfast on Friday.
Cost per person: $275. A deposit of $100 confirms your place.

Upcoming Event!
Recital Program Tuesday, August 13th:
Matt Dane and pianist Annie Antonacos will present a recital program for Opera House Arts at the Burnt Cove Church in Stonington on Tuesday, August 13th. Matt will play both viola and viola d'amore, an unusual 14-stringed instrument invented in the Baroque era that is also well-suited for the music of today. The program will feature diverse music from the 18th-21st centuries, including Brahms' beautiful "Rain" Sonata, Op. 78.

Ninth Sunday after Pentecost:
Central to today's liturgy is the gospel call to live always in expectation of the Lord's return. That stance of waiting enables us to put all other aspects of our lives in the correct order. Material needs become not irrelevant, but secondary to our life in relationship to God in Christ. Jesus calls us to live as though he is at hand. The Eucharist is the repeated foretaste of the coming of the Lord to take us into the Kingdom.
We will spend several Sundays reading through the concluding portion of the Epistle to the Hebrews. This section deals with the call to faith, which we have in Christ. Our forbearers in the faith, especially Abraham and Sarah, are presented as models of this faith, which is described as the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things unseen. It is in remembering that God was faithful to our ancestors in faith that we are equipped for our own time of waiting.
The first reading relates God's promise to Abraham and Sarah, old and childless, to give them an heir and produce from them a new people. For the first time, the Scriptures express what will become central to the Gospel proclamation: righteousness depends on faith.
As we gather to celebrate the Eucharist, we are upheld in our expectation of Jesus' promise to take us into his Kingdom by the memory of our mothers and fathers in the faith whose hope was fulfilled by God.
