Special Thank You: Michael Jenkins, Jr.
The faculty and staff of the Region 6 South Central Public Health Training Center would like to wish Mr. Michael Jenkins Jr., MPH, CHES continued success in his professional endeavors as he transitions to the next stage of his career. Mr. Jenkins has served as the HRSA Project Officer for the Training Center program for the past three years. During this time, he has provided supportive and dependable guidance to the Region 6 SCPHTC and our partners. We appreciate his steady and cordial leadership and it has been a true pleasure for us to have worked with Michael. We wish him great success in the future.   
New Partner Spotlight: Isabella Parise
Please welcome Isabella Parise to to the Region 6 South Central Public Health Training Center team!

Isabella will serve as the Manager for Instructional Training and Continuing Education for the Region 6 South Central Public Health Training Center . She recently graduated with her Masters of Public Health from Tulane University in the Global Community Health and Behavioral Sciences Department. Her focus is in Health Education. She worked as a graduate assistant under the Associate Dean of Student Affairs, for the last two years.

Isabella will be overseeing all Region 6 and Distance Learning practicums, for Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine. Prior to arriving at Tulane, Isabella worked as an academic practicum coordinator, in Chicago. She oversaw practicums from over 25 different universities. She is excited to bring her expertise to R6 at Tulane. She has lived in New Orleans for three years. Isabella is thrilled to remain in the city and a part of the SPHTM family.

The Introducing Service, Emotional Support, and Therapy Animals: Benefits, Legal, and Ethical Considerations training provides public health professionals, students, Tribes and Tribal-serving organizations with information, tools, and resources on the use and function of Service Animals, Therapy Animals, Emotional Support Animals, and pets.

Course learning objectives include:
  • Recognize the breadth and depth of the field of Service Animals

  • Explain the differences between, and benefits of, Service Animals, Emotional Support Animals, Therapy Animals and pets

  • Describe the advantages of the use of Service Animals in today’s society, including current evidence-based research

  • Define the current laws/regulations

  • Recognize legal/ethical considerations for professional interactions with individuals using Service Animals

Tribal Behavioral Health

The Tribal Behavioral Health curriculum is designed to provide general guidance and understanding to increase the knowledge of behavioral health in the American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) population and among tribal health departments, including issues and challenges — and organizations seeking to improve AI/AN behavioral health. 

The 4 courses included in this curriculum will cover several topics related to behavioral health in the AI/AN population, including historical trauma and current issues. Descriptions of some of the programs and organizations that are working to improve AI/AN behavioral health will also be presented.
