What have Nicole Arendt, Principal Timpani and Mark Beaty, Principal Bass been doing over the last month?

Rehearsing and performing with fine musicians is home for me. It's where I feel most vibrantly alive, most deeply connected. Before the #stayathome protocols I was scheduled to arrive at the Port Theatre yesterday to begin rehearsals for the final weekend of the Vancouver Island Symphony's 25th anniversary season. I would have been chatting with the friendly theatre and VIS staff, reconnecting with musician friends and colleagues, warming up on the fabulous timpani purchased for us several years ago by one of our many generous donors, and eventually wandering to the Green Room to enjoy a cup of coffee brewed by one of our much appreciated VIS volunteers.

While I'm sad that I won't get to perform Dvorak's New World Symphony this weekend, I'm excited that I can keep working on my new project, Brave New Band, with my husband Chris Helman. It's awesome that the person I'm supposed to stay at home with is a fantastic musician who is so dedicated to our work together. Last fall, we did a recording session with 4 of our original tunes in Nanaimo, which you can find at BraveNewBand.bandcamp.com . A year ago we turned our cameras on to capture an early version of one of the songs, Tal Mundo. Last week, Mark Beaty joined us remotely. So, until we're able to once again share the magic of live performance, I hope you enjoy our online offerings.

Nicole
