Dear Friend,

I am so grateful to be part of THIS community.

This is a storm we are weathering together, while acknowledging that we aren’t all necessarily in the same boat.

As the program director for the Carbon Valley Class of sixth-graders, I’ve been spending a lot of my time connecting with them and their families. We are all working together to support each other’s individual needs, as they differ from one family to another.
Many of the families I serve are suddenly forced into roles they’ve never been in before — juggling work while children are home, and having to support their home-learning needs. Often, there is little time to access community resources, however I am so encouraged to see Dreamer Scholar families step up and offer basic resources to each other, such as toilet paper, cleaning supplies or even eggs from their own chickens.

One family’s needs went far beyond those basic necessities. The mother of one family fell ill and went into quarantine, leaving the father to care for five children himself. The entire Carbon Valley Class community, including school staff, rallied together and offered items to support the family during quarantine. Families provided a humidifier and thermometer for the mother and honey and tea for the children developing a cough. Teachers from the school brought groceries and meals for the family.

With the help of the community, the mother beat the illness and was able to come out of quarantine. She told me, “it was like a dream” to be able to hug her kids after 10 days.

I know during this time, there has been a lot of fear and a lot of tension, but what I’ve seen in our community — coworkers at the “I Have A Dream” Foundation, Dreamer Scholar families, and our supporters — is only generosity, big hearts, wanting to help, and optimism. It’s hard and we’re going through hard things, however, I’m just surrounded by really positive, hard-working people who are looking out for each other.

We ask that you support us , as we continue to support Dreamer Scholars and their families through this crisis.

Sincerely,
Aurora Santos
Carbon Valley Class Program Director

Did You Know?
The COVID-19 Stimulus Package / CARES Act for Nonprofits provides new charitable deductions
  1. A new federal deduction is available for up to $300 per taxpayer ($600 for a married couple) in annual charitable contributions in 2020, even if they do not itemize their deductions.
  2. Individuals can elect to deduct cash contributions, up to 100% of their 2020 adjusted gross income, on itemized 2020 tax returns. This is up from the previous limit of 60%.

Additionally, the Colorado Child Care Contribution tax credit enables you to deduct 50% of your gift on your state taxes. For example, if you donate $1,000, you will receive $500 back on your taxes! As always, please consult with your tax advisor.
Thank you for being a dedicated part of this community — we couldn’t do this without you.
Querido amigo,
